Le Commandant Charcot in the Antarctic ice wilderness

The Voyage

Pack-ice expedition from Spitsbergen

The Geographic North Pole. Beyond seventeen degrees north, the question "how far" becomes meaningless and is replaced by another: "how to be here at all". Le Commandant Charcot - PC2 polar class, hybrid LNG/electric propulsion - is one of very few passenger ships built to reach 90° North. From Longyearbyen, the route turns north through multi-year ice; days are organised around Zodiac landings on the ice itself, polar lectures and the silent presence of a frozen ocean. A journey that redefines distance.

PONANT in Motion

© PONANT

This PONANT film offers a vivid impression of life aboard Le Commandant Charcot - onboard laboratories, panoramic observation areas and the extraordinary destinations that only this icebreaker reaches. This voyage follows the same spirit of polar discovery.

Early booking advantage: Voyages in 2027 fill quickly - premium cabins are often reserved 18-24 months in advance. An early booking enquiry is non-binding and secures your preferred cabin category.

The Route

The exact route is set by the expedition team on site, depending on ice and weather:

Flight included – this voyage is offered as a complete package with charter or scheduled flight, transfers and accommodation. See "Package Voyage" below for details.

  • Longyearbyen · Embarkation

Longyearbyen on Svalbard is the world's northernmost town with a permanent civilian population (78° N). The former coal-mining settlement is today the gateway to the Arctic - dog sledding, winter aurora, midnight sun in summer and the Svalbard Global Seed Vault.

Longyearbyen on Svalbard - colourful wooden houses by the harbour against snow-covered mountains
  • Ny-Ålesund

Ny-Ålesund on Svalbard is the world's northernmost permanently manned research settlement (78°55' N). Roald Amundsen set off from here in 1926 with the airship Norge for the North Pole - the historic mooring mast still stands today.

  • North Pole

The geographic North Pole (90° N) lies in the middle of the Arctic Ocean, in about 4,200 metres of water. All meridians converge here; every direction is south. Only a handful of vessels worldwide (nuclear icebreakers, Le Commandant Charcot) reach the Pole, crossing dense multi-year pack ice often several metres thick. On board, the moment is usually marked by an ice picnic on the floe, with possible sightings of polar bears, seals and the pole star directly overhead.

Destination

The Ship

Le Commandant Charcot

Le Commandant Charcot is the world's only luxury icebreaker carrying passengers. PC2 ice class, LNG hybrid propulsion, 270 guests. The ship reaches the geographic North Pole and penetrates deep into Antarctic pack ice - places previously reserved for research icebreakers.

In the Arctic, Le Commandant Charcot sails to the geographic North Pole and through the Northwest Passage - expeditions to areas no other passenger ship can reach.

Why ivent-sailing

We know the sea — we have sailed many regions ourselves as skippers.

That is what makes our advice different: we know how geographic conditions shape the maritime experience, how that translates for you as a guest depending on your place on the ship, what sea conditions to expect in which season, what makes a quiet anchor bay special, and which cabin on which ship is worth the upgrade. Our recommendations come from the water, not from a brochure.
