Star Clippers vs. Sea Cloud: Sailing Cruises Compared

Real wind in the sails, creaking timber, the smell of salt water — sailing cruises are a world apart. Star Clippers and Sea Cloud are the two great names in this segment. What unites them: real sails, manageable guest numbers, an atmosphere far removed from mainstream cruising. What separates them: style, character and target audience.

Star Clippers: Adventure Under Full Sail

Royal Clipper by Star Clippers
Royal Clipper – the world’s largest full-rigged sailing ship under sail

The three ships of Star Clippers — Star Clipper, Star Flyer and the magnificent Royal Clipper — are modern reconstructions of historic clippers. Up to 19 sails, up to 5,069 sq m of sail area on the Royal Clipper: this is real sailing at cruise level.

The style is nautical and relaxed: teak decks, tropical bar, a climbing mast for the adventurous. The atmosphere is closer to a sailing yacht expedition than a classic cruise ship. Guests who want to lie at the bow at noon and watch the stars at night are right at home here.

Star Clippers suits you if:

  • The sailing experience itself is the priority
  • A relaxed, informal atmosphere is desired
  • Caribbean, Mediterranean and exotic routes interest you
  • Value for money plays a role

Sea Cloud: Sailing as an Art Form

Sea Cloud Spirit
Sea Cloud Spirit – modern luxury following historic traditions

The Sea Cloud was built in 1931 as a private yacht for Marjorie Merriweather Post and is today arguably the most famous sailing yacht in the world. Mahogany interiors, brass fittings, cabins with antique furnishings — the Sea Cloud is a floating work of art.

Sea Cloud Cruises today operates three ships: the original Sea Cloud, the more modern Sea Cloud II and the new Sea Cloud Spirit. All three combine historic charm with contemporary comfort — on the Sea Cloud II and Spirit in a considerably more modern setting.

Sea Cloud suits you if:

  • The history and aesthetics of the ship itself fascinate you
  • Fine dining and an elegant evening dress code suit you
  • Mediterranean and Atlantic routes are preferred
  • Exclusivity and small groups (max. 136 guests) matter

Our Verdict

Star Clippers for adventure, Sea Cloud for elegance. Both offer genuine sailing — but in a completely different style. We are happy to help you make the right choice.
