The First of the Explorer Class
Le Lapérouse entered service in 2018 as the inaugural ship of Ponant’s Explorer class and the vessel that established the design brief and operational philosophy for the five ships that followed. Named for Jean-François de Galaup, comte de Lapérouse – the 18th-century French navigator who set out in 1785 on a voyage of scientific discovery that covered the Pacific, the North Pacific coast, and the waters off Australia before the expedition disappeared without trace – she carries a name associated with both ambition and the unknowable.
She accommodates 184 guests in 92 outside cabins and suites. Her ice-strengthened hull, Zodiac launching facilities, and compact profile enable operations in anchorages and at landing sites unavailable to larger vessels. The same hull operates equally well in tropical conditions, making the ship genuinely multi-environment in capability.
Blue Eye – An Original
Le Lapérouse introduced the Blue Eye underwater lounge to the Ponant fleet, and it remains the feature most distinctive to the Explorer class. Positioned below the waterline, the lounge’s two large oval portholes and integrated hydrophone give guests an unobstructed view of and listen to the ocean from within the hull. Ponant developed this in partnership with designers of the film “The Blue Planet”; the result is a facility without parallel in expedition cruising.
On Board
The on-board atmosphere is Franco-international in character. The main restaurant serves open seating, cuisine is French in direction, and the wine list is managed by a sommelier throughout. An expedition team of naturalists and regional specialists is embarked on polar and remote itineraries. Evening briefings in the lecture theatre are a structural part of the programme – context that makes the experience more rewarding rather than simply scenic.
Destinations
As the class pioneer, Le Lapérouse operates across the widest spread of Ponant’s routes: the Antarctic Peninsula and Weddell Sea, Arctic and Svalbard programmes, the Pacific – including French Polynesia and remote archipelagos of the South and Central Pacific – West Africa, the Mediterranean, and Indian Ocean itineraries. The ship’s history of range is appropriate to her name.
