Explorer Class – Named for Antarctica’s Greatest French Cartographer
Le Dumont d’Urville is among the later ships of Ponant’s Explorer class, named for Jules Dumont d’Urville – the French naval officer and cartographer who led three circumnavigations and, in 1840, claimed Adélie Land in Antarctica for France. It is a name that carries genuine weight in polar exploration history, and the ship bearing it is among those most regularly deployed to the Antarctic Peninsula and sub-Antarctic islands.
She accommodates 184 guests in 92 outside cabins and suites. The hull is built to the same Ponant Explorer specification: ice-strengthened for high-latitude operations, equipped with a dedicated Zodiac launch deck, and fitted throughout with the cabin and dining standards that define the class.
The Blue Eye
Like all ships in the Explorer class, Le Dumont d’Urville carries the Blue Eye – a below-waterline lounge with two large oval portholes and a hydrophone system that transmits underwater sound into the space. In Antarctic waters – where leopard seals hunt, crabeater seals lounge on ice floes, and humpback whales surface close to the hull – the Blue Eye transforms passive observation into something altogether more engaging.
Life On Board
The ship operates with an on-board expedition team that varies by itinerary: marine biologists, ornithologists, glaciologists, and historians depending on destination. Evening briefings in the lecture theatre prepare guests for the following day’s landings; the Zodiac programme puts guests ashore at sites where wildlife or landscapes reward close approach on foot.
Dining is French in direction: open-seating main restaurant, sommelier-managed wine list, and a second intimate dining venue for group evenings. The spa and fitness room remain accessible throughout the voyage, and the outdoor deck areas – including a comfortable observation platform – provide prime positions for wildlife spotting at sea.
Destinations
Le Dumont d’Urville operates Antarctic Peninsula seasons in the austral summer, with sub-Antarctic island programmes visiting South Georgia, the Falklands, Kerguelen, and Crozet. Northern deployments cover Svalbard, Greenland and the Norwegian coast. Between polar seasons, Mediterranean, West Africa and Indian Ocean itineraries fill the schedule.
