Impressions of the Silver Origin
Built for the Galapagos
Silver Origin is the only Silversea ship designed from the outset for a single destination: the Galapagos Islands. Built in 2020, she was conceived as a vessel capable of meeting the specific environmental requirements, permit conditions, and guest ratios that the Galapagos National Park authority sets for expedition ships operating in the archipelago. With 100 guests and 90 crew, she maintains among the highest crew-to-guest ratios in Galapagos cruising.
At 5,800 gross tonnes, she is among the smallest ships in the Silversea fleet – comparable in size to a large yacht rather than a cruise vessel – which is consistent with the constraints of Galapagos operations and the intimacy that the destination requires.
The Galapagos Experience
The Galapagos is a destination where the on-shore experience takes precedence over the ship in most guests’ recollections. Silver Origin’s role is to place guests in the right position each morning and evening, keep them comfortable and well-fed between excursions, and deliver a quality of expedition knowledge through its team of Ecuadorian national expert guides that connects the wildlife encounters to their scientific and ecological context.
Eight Zodiacs are available for wet landings and panga transfers. An interactive Basecamp on board serves as the preparation and debrief space for the expedition programme. The Ecuadorian national guides work alongside Silversea’s own expedition staff.
Horizon Balconies
A feature introduced on Silver Origin and not yet replicated across the fleet is the Horizon Balcony: a balcony panel that can be retracted at the touch of a button, converting the veranda into an open platform facing the sea. In the Galapagos light, with endemic species visible from the deck rail, this is not a cosmetic feature.
Accommodation and Dining
All 50 suites include butler service and veranda access. Seven categories run from Classic Veranda Suite to Owner’s Suite; the top categories include a separate living area and a larger outdoor terrace. Two dining venues serve the 100 guests: The Restaurant for main meals with a focus on produce sourced from Ecuador and the broader Pacific region, and The Grill for poolside lunches. All-inclusive coverage extends to drinks, excursions, and gratuities.
Seasonality
Silver Origin operates the Galapagos year-round, taking advantage of two distinct seasons: the warm season (January to June, with calmer water and drier conditions) and the cool season (July to December, with stronger currents that attract larger concentrations of marine life, including whale sharks). Both seasons offer compelling wildlife encounters; the choice between them is largely a matter of preference rather than quality.
