A Century of Sailing in Her Hull
The Artemis was built in 1926 as a working vessel, and her three masts and barque rig carry that history with them on every passage. Now restored to carrying passengers, she offers something that no modern ship can replicate: the particular sensation of sailing a vessel with a century of ocean miles behind her, where every creak of the hull and every shift of the rig is the sound of genuine maritime tradition at work.
Her proportions are handsome – a broad, stable hull supporting tall masts and square sails that catch the wind with a directness that modern sailing vessels rarely achieve. Seeing the Artemis under full sail is a sight that stops people on the dockside.
Sailing the Atlantic and the Mediterranean
The Artemis divides her seasons between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, following the wind and the programme across routes that have defined European seafaring for centuries. Canary Islands passages, Atlantic crossings, and Mediterranean coastal voyages give guests a varied choice of destinations and conditions.
Up to 30 guests sail together with a professional crew that knows the ship and her waters intimately. Participation in the sailing is actively encouraged – hauling on lines, setting sails, and standing a night watch are all available to those who want them.
Life on the Artemis
Accommodation is in well-maintained cabins below decks, sleeping two to four guests each. The ship’s saloon provides a warm common space for meals and evenings, and the deck – whether under the Atlantic sun or the Mediterranean moon – is always the best place to be.
The rhythm of life aboard follows the sea. Watches, meals, and the changing light punctuate the day in a way that feels profoundly different from ordinary life ashore. Guests who have sailed aboard tall ships before recognise it immediately; those experiencing it for the first time rarely forget it.
A Genuine Barque Under Sail
The Artemis carries square sails on her fore and main masts and fore-and-aft sails on the mizzen – the classic barque configuration that powered the great merchant routes of the nineteenth century. Under full sail in a good breeze, she moves with a weight and confidence that is unlike anything a modern hull can provide. This is not a replica or an approximation. It is the real thing.
