Aegean & Greece
Sailing the Aegean & Greece
Greece is the Aegean at its most alluring: whitewashed Cyclades, sheltered Ionian bays, ancient harbours and a reliable Meltemi in high summer. Whether a sailing voyage on a yacht, a sailing cruise on a tall ship, a boutique cruise or a catamaran cruise – the Greek seas carry every form, from an intimate passage to ultra-luxury.
The Cyclades – Mykonos, Santorini and Amorgos
The classic image of the Aegean: cubic white houses, blue domes, bare rocky islands in a deep-blue sea. Mykonos is glamorous and lively, Santorini with its caldera one of the most spectacular anchorages in the Mediterranean, while Amorgos and Paros stay more unspoilt. Short hops, safe harbours and the Meltemi that fills the sails.
The Ionian Islands – Corfu, Zakynthos and Paxos
The green, milder side of Greece in the west. Corfu carries Venetian and British traces, Zakynthos the famous smugglers’ cove, and little Paxos is an anchoring paradise with olive groves down to the water. Calmer seas than the Aegean, ideal for a more relaxed voyage too.
Saronic Gulf and Argolis – Hydra, Nafplio and Monemvasia
On Athens’ doorstep lie car-free islands and harbours steeped in history: glamorous, car-free Hydra, Venetian Nafplio beneath its fortress, the Byzantine rock town of Monemvasia. Short distances, plenty of culture, a fine start from Athens.
The Peloponnese and the Turkish Aegean – Gythio, Bodrum and Kusadasi
For those going further: the stark Mani around Gythio, ancient Olympia from Katakolon, and across the border the lively Turkish Aegean coast with Bodrum and Kusadasi up to Istanbul. Passages for anyone seeking more sea miles and variety.
Which ship for Greece?
The Aegean offers the full range – from a sailing voyage to a cruise. Every one of these voyages is arranged and booked through ivent-sailing:
- Sailing yacht with cook and skipper (Rhea) – intimate, few guests, anchoring in bays no large ship can reach. The most personal way in.
- Catamaran cruise (Lagoon 620) – spacious and stable, with a skipper aboard; perfect for relaxing and swimming between the islands, even without any sailing experience.
- Sailing cruise on tall ships (Star Flyer, Star Clipper) – true sailing under full canvas, the romance of the classic windjammers, plus the wind-driven Running on Waves.
- Boutique cruising (Le Ponant, Le Champlain, Le Dumont d’Urville) – French elegance, intimate ships, great cuisine.
- Ultra-luxury cruise (Silver Nova) – suite-based, the highest level of service.
So the Santorini dreamer who is not (yet) ready to book the grand voyage finds the right yacht in the very same waters – and vice versa.

Frequently asked questions
What makes a sailing holiday in the Aegean special?
Short hops from island to island, whitewashed Cycladic villages, ancient harbours and, in high summer, the Meltemi that reliably brings wind. Anchor in a bay in the morning, sail to the next island at midday, dine at a harbour taverna in the evening.
Which ports do the Greece voyages start from?
Most voyages start in Athens (Piraeus or Lavrion). Corfu is a frequent starting point for the Ionian Islands, and Kusadasi or Bodrum for the Turkish Aegean. You will find the exact port of embarkation and disembarkation with each voyage in the list.
When is the best time to sail the Aegean?
From May to October. July and August are hot and bring the strong Meltemi; May, June, September and October are milder and calmer - for many the most pleasant time to sail.
Is the Aegean suitable for beginners?
Yes. The yachts and catamarans carry a skipper aboard, so you need no sailing experience. The Ionian Islands and the Saronic Gulf are especially sheltered; the open Cyclades with the Meltemi are more demanding.
What should you not miss in Greece?
Sailing into the caldera of Santorini, car-free Hydra, the old town of Nafplio beneath the Palamidi fortress, and the rock town of Monemvasia. We are glad to tell you which islands lie on your route in a personal conversation.
