Fourth Boreal-Class Ship – The Greek Isles Specialist
Le Lyrial entered service in 2015 as the fourth and final ship in Ponant’s Boreal class, sharing the same 10,700-gross-ton hull and 264-guest capacity as her three sisters while developing a reputation for the Mediterranean itineraries – particularly Greek island programmes – that have become one of her strongest associations. The name derives from the Lyre, the constellation, and she sails regularly in waters that ancient Greek navigators knew by heart.
Built at the Fincantieri Ancona yard in Italy and operated under French flag, Le Lyrial completes a quartet of ships that established Ponant’s position as the leading French expedition cruise line. Her 132 outside cabins and suites are arranged across six decks, all facing outward, and the ship carries a crew of approximately 140 to serve her 264 guests.
On Board
The public spaces follow the Boreal-class template: a main restaurant on open seating, a more intimate second dining venue, a spa, swimming pool, and fitness room. The wine list – strong in French and Mediterranean appellations – is managed by the ship’s sommelier throughout. On expedition itineraries, a team of naturalists and regional specialists supplements the permanent crew with briefings and Zodiac-landing leadership.
The ratio of roughly one crew member to two guests keeps service levels consistent across all areas of the ship. The atmosphere is unhurried: smaller scale than most cruise ships, quieter than most expedition vessels.
Cuisine
Ponant’s culinary programme on Le Lyrial adapts to the itinerary without abandoning its French foundation. In the Mediterranean, local produce and regional dishes feature alongside the regular menu. The sommelier’s selections extend to wines from Greece, Italy, and the Adriatic during Mediterranean deployments. Breakfast and lunch are served buffet style; dinner in the main restaurant offers a set menu with choices.
Destinations
Le Lyrial operates Mediterranean and Aegean programmes in spring and summer, with routes through the Greek Islands, Adriatic ports, Corsica, Sardinia, and the Turkish coast. Outside the Mediterranean season she deploys to South America, Antarctica, and the Arctic. The full Boreal-class range means she is capable across all latitudes, even if the Aegean has become something of a home.
