Explorer Class – Built for the Far Horizons

Le Jacques Cartier is one of the later ships in Ponant’s Explorer class, named for the 16th-century French navigator who explored the St. Lawrence River and laid the groundwork for French settlement in Canada. The name carries associations of careful, patient exploration – an apt description of the ship’s programme, which sends her into fjords, past ice shelves, and ashore at wildlife sites where patience and quiet movement matter as much as the ability to get there.

She accommodates 184 guests in 92 outside cabins and suites. Her ice-strengthened hull, Zodiac launching capability, and on-board expedition staff make her fully equipped for the polar itineraries that account for a significant share of her calendar, while the same ship operates comfortably on Mediterranean and tropical programmes in the shoulder seasons.

The Blue Eye Underwater Lounge

All ships in the Explorer class carry the Blue Eye – a dedicated lounge below the waterline with two large oval portholes set into the hull and a hydrophone system that brings underwater sound into the space. The concept was developed specifically for Ponant and is available on no other expedition line. On itineraries in the Pacific or the Norwegian coast, where marine mammal populations are dense and the water is clear, the lounge provides an encounter with the sea that is not reproducible from the deck above.

Accommodation and Dining

The cabin range covers panoramic-window staterooms through to Owner Suites with private terraces. All categories face outward. The main restaurant operates open seating; the sommelier maintains a wine list strong in French appellations throughout. A second dining venue handles group bookings and themed evenings. The spa, fitness room and outdoor sun decks complete the on-board offering.

Destinations

Le Jacques Cartier operates across Ponant’s full global range: the Antarctic Peninsula and sub-Antarctic islands, Arctic Norway and Svalbard, the Baltic and Mediterranean, Pacific island programmes in French Polynesia and the South Pacific, and Indian Ocean itineraries. The ship’s ability to move between these environments without modification is a product of her Explorer-class specification.
