Second Ship in the Explorer Class

Le Champlain is the second vessel in Ponant’s Explorer class, delivered in September 2018 and making her maiden voyage from Honfleur to Lisbon the following month. She accommodates 180 guests – fractionally fewer than her later Explorer-class sisters – in a hull designed for expedition itineraries across all ocean environments. Named for Samuel de Champlain, the 17th-century French cartographer and navigator known as the Father of New France, she carries a name associated with methodical, intelligent exploration of unfamiliar territory.

The hull was built by VARD in Tulcea, Romania, and fitted out at VARD’s Søviknes yard in Norway – a construction approach that combines Romanian hull expertise with Norwegian polar outfitting. Ice-strengthened plating and a shallow operating draft enable her to work at latitudes and in anchorages that larger vessels cannot reach.

The Blue Eye Underwater Lounge

Le Champlain, like all Explorer-class ships, carries the Blue Eye – a dedicated underwater salon below the waterline with two large oval portholes and an integrated hydrophone system. The lounge allows guests to observe the ocean floor and passing marine life from within the hull, in a space that combines the architecture of a private lounge with an entirely original view of the sea. No other expedition line offers a comparable facility.

Accommodation and Life On Board

All cabins and suites face outward; there are no interior categories on this class. The range extends from staterooms with panoramic windows to Owner Suites with private terraces. Dining is managed by Ponant’s French culinary team: open-seating main restaurant, a second intimate venue for evenings and group dinners, and a wine list maintained by the ship’s sommelier throughout the voyage.

An expedition team of naturalists and specialist guides is embarked on polar itineraries, delivering briefings and leading the Zodiac landing programme from the ship’s dedicated launch deck.

Destinations

Le Champlain operates across Ponant’s complete itinerary range: the Antarctic Peninsula, South Georgia and the Falklands, the Arctic and Svalbard, Scandinavia, the Mediterranean, and tropical island programmes in the Indian Ocean and Pacific.
