Modern Tall Ship, Unchanged Principles
The Sea Cloud II was built in 2001 as the younger companion to the legendary Sea Cloud, applying the same commitment to sailing tradition and intimate scale to a ship designed from the keel up for contemporary expectations. She carries 94 guests – a modest number by any cruise standard – across 47 outside cabins on four spacious decks. Three masts and 23 sails give her a sail area of 2,700 square metres; like her fleet mates, all sails are set by hand.
Where the original Sea Cloud is defined by her historical interiors, the Sea Cloud II offers a more consistent modern standard throughout, while retaining the atmosphere of a private sailing yacht rather than a cruise ship.
Sailing Experience
The Sea Cloud II’s rig combines traditional proportions with modern materials – metal frames, contemporary sail cloth, synthetic ropes – which allows her to perform well under sail even in lighter conditions. The main mast reaches 57 metres above the waterline. At speed under canvas with the engine off, she is as quiet and direct as any vessel of her size sailing today.
Guests willing to climb to the first mast platform may do so safely with a harness; the view from there across the open sea and down onto the decks below is one that most guests recall long after they have come home.
Accommodation
The 47 outside cabins span seven categories. At the top, two Owner Suites on the Lido deck offer a canopy bed, electric fireplace, panoramic windows, a separate sitting area, and a marble bathroom of 4.2 square metres. Below these, the Junior Suites carry walk-in wardrobes and fireplaces of their own. The mid-ship Deluxe Staterooms are generous in proportion, with three large portholes and a sitting area. All cabins throughout the ship carry Italian marble bathrooms with golden fixtures, minibar, safe, television with DVD, and adjustable air conditioning.
Three compact F-category cabins echo the proportions of a ship’s officer quarters – a practical choice for guests who want the Sea Cloud II experience at entry price.
Dining and Social Life
A single restaurant serves all guests at open seating, accompanied by a wine list chosen to complement the cooking. The Lounge features a Steinway grand piano and serves as the ship’s living room for pre-dinner drinks, live music evenings, and informal talks. There is a library, a boutique, a massage and beauty salon, a fitness room, and a swim platform for access to the sea directly from the ship.
Music voyages on the Steinway, culinary-themed itineraries, and participation in classic sailing regattas (including Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez and the Bucket Regatta in Saint Barths) give Sea Cloud II a distinct character in the programme calendar.
Destinations
The Sea Cloud II operates year-round across the Atlantic arc: Mediterranean coasts and islands in spring and summer, Canary Islands and Madeira in autumn, Caribbean passages in winter. Shorter four-night taster voyages alternate with 7- to 10-night routes and occasional 17-night Atlantic crossings. Her three-mast silhouette is a striking presence at any port of call, and her size permits entry to anchorages and harbours that are beyond the reach of full-size cruise ships.
