A Living Heritage Under Full Sail
Born in 1902, the Sir Robert Baden Powell is one of the oldest sailing vessels still carrying passengers on the open sea. Her wooden hull and towering rig are not museum pieces – they are alive and working, driven by the wind just as they were over a century ago. Sailing aboard her means joining a story that has been unfolding across oceans for generations.
The vessel has a particular significance as the Tabaluga Ship, associated with the Peter Maffay Foundation. Her voyages carry a spirit of adventure and discovery that speaks as much to the young-at-heart as to seasoned seafarers.
Active Sailing – You Are Part of the Crew
Guests on board are invited to lend a hand with the sails, haul on lines, stand a watch, or simply observe the art of traditional seamanship from the deck. The crew welcomes participation – there is no prescribed schedule, and the rhythm of the voyage is set by the wind and the sea.
Up to 30 guests share this experience in a close-knit community. Evenings gather naturally around the saloon table, with stories exchanged between sailors who arrived as strangers and depart as something more.
Aboard and Below Decks
Accommodation is in keeping with the vessel’s honest, seafaring character. Cabins sleep two to four guests in comfortable bunks, with shared facilities that suit the communal spirit of the voyage. Everything aboard is well maintained and functional – the emphasis is on the experience above decks rather than on luxury fittings below.
Meals are prepared fresh in the ship’s galley and served at the communal table. The simplicity is deliberate: what counts here is the wind in the rigging, the horizon ahead, and the company around you.
Destinations and Voyages
The Sir Robert Baden Powell sails the waters of Northern Europe, the Baltic, and the Atlantic approaches. Whether crossing the open sea or threading through island chains, each voyage has the quality of a genuine passage rather than a coastal excursion. The ship goes where the programme takes her, and the journey is always the destination.
