A Tall Ship Built for the 21st Century

The Sea Cloud Spirit joined the Sea Cloud Cruises fleet in 2020 as the newest and most contemporary member of a family rooted in genuine sailing tradition. Her three masts rise 50 metres above the waterline and carry 28 hand-set sails – a total canvas area of 4,100 square metres – yet beneath this classical silhouette lies a ship built entirely to modern standards of comfort, safety and environmental responsibility.

What distinguishes the Spirit from comparable vessels is the balance she strikes. She is large enough to offer proper amenities – a spa, fitness room, open Lido bar, Steinway grand – yet carries only 136 guests, keeping the atmosphere closer to a private yacht than a cruise ship.

Life Under Sail

On Sea Cloud Spirit, the sails are set by hand. There are no winches for the guest to notice; the crew works the lines in the old manner, and if you are on deck when the canvas fills for the first time on a passage, it is a memorable thing. Guests may climb to the first platform of the main mast, safety-harnessed and accompanied – not a simulated experience but a real one, with open ocean below.

When conditions allow, the engine is shut down and the ship moves under sail alone. The resulting quiet – only wind, water, and the creak of rigging – defines the Sea Cloud experience and cannot be replicated on a motor vessel.

Accommodation

All 69 outside cabins are air-conditioned and individually appointed, with marble bathrooms, minibar, safe, and WiFi throughout. Many carry private balconies or large opening panoramic windows. The cabin range runs from well-proportioned Superior Staterooms with generous portholes through three categories of balconied Junior Suite to three full Owner Suites on the upper decks, each with a California king-size bed, walk-in wardrobe, and a bathtub alongside the shower.

Single travellers are accommodated in two dedicated single-occupancy cabins rather than being asked to pay a double supplement – an unusual and welcome consideration.

Dining and Social Life

Meals are served at open seating in the main restaurant, allowing guests to sit where and with whom they please at each sitting. The atmosphere is unhurried; there are no assigned tables, no dress codes that feel punishing, and no rush between courses. In the evenings, the deck bistro offers a more informal alternative. The Lido bar is the natural gathering point on sunny afternoons at sea.

On-board languages are German and English; the crew is international. The ratio of roughly one crew member to every 1.6 guests means service is present without being obtrusive.

Destinations

The Sea Cloud Spirit sails the Atlantic arc – Mediterranean coasts, the Canary Islands, Madeira and the Azores, transatlantic crossings to the Caribbean, and routes along the Lesser Antilles and the Grenadines. She also operates selected Costa Rica and Central America itineraries in winter. Her shallow draft and manoeuvrable profile allow calls at smaller harbours and anchorages that larger cruise ships cannot reach.
