A Dutch Trading Legend, Reborn as a Tall Ship
Launched in 1918 as a working cargo schooner in the Netherlands, the Oosterschelde spent her early decades carrying freight across European waters. Today she carries something rather different: guests with a taste for genuine ocean sailing aboard one of the finest restored tall ships in the world. Her three masts, her wooden decks, and her steady motion through heavy swells connect every passenger to a maritime tradition that goes back centuries.
The Oosterschelde is a veteran of ocean crossings including Atlantic passages and circumnavigations – a vessel that has proved herself on deep water, not merely coastal hops.
Ocean Voyages, Not Excursions
The Oosterschelde’s programme is built around long-distance sailing voyages. Atlantic crossings, passages to the Azores, Caribbean legs, and extended European itineraries give guests the experience of life on the open ocean. Days at sea are spent in the rhythm of watches, wind, and weather – a very different pace from ordinary travel.
Up to 24 guests sail together with an experienced professional crew. Participation in the sailing is possible and encouraged, whether you are an experienced sailor or a first-time tall ship passenger.
Life on Board
Cabins for two to four guests provide private space below decks, comfortable and well-fitted for extended voyages. The saloon is the social heart of the ship – meals are taken here together, and evenings find the group gathered around the table long after dinner. The cook works with fresh provisions at each port of call, and the galley produces meals that are generous and satisfying rather than pretentious.
Between ports, the deck is your drawing room. There is always something to watch – a sail adjustment, a dolphin running alongside, the stars overhead when the ship is out of reach of any shore light.
A Ship That Has Sailed the World
The Oosterschelde has circumnavigated the globe and crossed the Atlantic more times than her crew can easily count. That history is felt in every plank and spar. Sailing aboard her is not a simulated experience – it is the real thing, on a vessel that has earned her place among the most respected tall ships afloat.
