Twelve Guests, One Small Ship, the High Arctic
The Meander is a vessel that does not aspire to impress with scale. At just 12 guests, she is intimate by design – and that intimacy is precisely her strength. Built in 1956 and ice-strengthened for polar waters, she has spent decades finding her way into the kinds of places that larger vessels can only observe from a respectful distance.
Spitsbergen fjords choked with ice. Coastlines that see fewer visitors in a year than most city streets see in an hour. The Meander goes to these places because she is built to, and the guests aboard her are those who want to arrive rather than just pass by.
The Expedition Spirit
A voyage on the Meander is an expedition in the truest sense. The programme is shaped by conditions as much as by the itinerary. Ice, weather, wildlife sightings, and the enthusiasm of the group all influence where the ship goes and what she does. The expedition leader and crew make decisions in real time, and the flexibility of a small vessel is one of the greatest assets aboard.
Shore excursions by Zodiac allow the group to land on beaches and moraines inaccessible to larger ships. Guests explore on foot, with expedition staff providing context on the geology, wildlife, and history of the polar landscape.
Aboard the Meander
Six cabins accommodate 12 guests in an arrangement that favours conversation over seclusion. The saloon doubles as a lecture room, a dining space, and the social centre of the vessel. Evenings here, with the charts spread on the table and the day’s observations fresh in everyone’s minds, have a quality that is hard to find elsewhere.
Meals are prepared in the ship’s galley and taken together – breakfast before the morning landing, dinner after the return from the day’s excursions. The cook makes the most of fresh provisions wherever they are available.
Where the Meander Sails
The Meander’s primary territory is the Norwegian High Arctic – Spitsbergen, the waters around Svalbard, and in some seasons the coast of Greenland. Her ice-strengthened hull means she can operate in conditions and in seasons that rule out less capable vessels. For those seeking the authentic polar experience, few ships can match what she offers.
