Deck plan

The Clipper Ship, Reborn

The Stad Amsterdam was built in 2000 to the lines of the great nineteenth-century clipper ships – the fastest sailing vessels ever to cross the oceans under commercial sail. Her three masts carry a full square-rigged rig that is faithful to the original plans, and under sail she achieves the kind of speed and performance that made the clipper ships legendary. She is not a replica in the pejorative sense: she is a working, ocean-going full-rigged ship built to the highest modern standards, with the sail plan and proportions of the original golden era.

The Stad Amsterdam was built in the Netherlands and named for the city of Amsterdam – a tribute to a city with one of the great seafaring traditions in the world.

Worldwide Voyages Under Full Sail

The Stad Amsterdam has sailed to every corner of the globe. Atlantic crossings, Mediterranean passages, Caribbean itineraries, and long-distance voyages have all featured in her programme. Up to 24 guests sail aboard her in the passenger accommodation, sharing the ship with a professional crew that handles the sailing and looks after the voyage.

Participation in the operation of the ship is possible and welcomed. The Stad Amsterdam under full sail in an Atlantic trade wind is not a sight that requires any explanation – it simply needs to be experienced.

On Board the Stad Amsterdam

Guest cabins are well appointed and comfortable, designed for extended ocean passages rather than brief coastal hops. The saloon provides a proper gathering space for meals and evenings, and the quality of the fit-out reflects the ambition of the ship’s original construction.

On deck, the view from between the masts – with sails set on three masts and the bow lifting to the Atlantic swell – is as close as a contemporary traveller can come to the experience of the great age of sail. The sounds, the motion, and the particular intimacy of a ship at sea in fair weather are all present and fully alive.

The Art of the Full-Rigged Ship

A full-rigged ship carries square sails on all three masts – the most complete and powerful expression of traditional sailing rig. The Stad Amsterdam carries this configuration with the confidence of a vessel that has sailed it thousands of miles. Watching her crew set and trim 23 sails in a freshening breeze is to watch seamanship at its most demanding and most satisfying.
