The Voyage

Narvik → Bergen

Northern Norway in autumn light. From Narvik above the Arctic Circle, the voyage threads its way through the Lofoten archipelago, then south along the coast to Tromsø, Ålesund, the Geirangerfjord and the Lysefjord. Thirteen nights of dramatic coastline at the moment when the tundra turns red and gold and the first northern lights begin to appear.

  • Narvik · Embarkation

On the Ofotfjord in northern Norway, Narvik lies far above the Arctic Circle in Nordland county. The port town is known for shipping out Swedish iron ore via the ore railway from Kiruna and for commemorating the 1940 sea and land battles of Narvik, documented in the award-winning war museum on the main square.

  • Svolvaer, Lofoten

Svolvær is the main town of Norway's Lofoten Islands, set picturesquely on the Vestfjord on the island of Austvågøy. Sharp granite peaks like Svolværgeita rise straight up behind the red fishermen's cabins.

  • Leknes, Lofoten

Main town of Vestvågøy island in Norway's Lofoten archipelago, far above the Arctic Circle. Surrounded by jagged peaks and long sandy beaches such as Uttakleiv, Leknes is the gateway for hikes and winter aurora experiences.

  • Brønnøysund

Brønnøysund is a port town on the Helgeland coast of central Norway, situated between the Arctic Circle and Trondheim. Its landmark is the 258-metre Torghatten mountain with a natural hole straight through the summit, said in legend to come from a troll's petrified arrow.

  • At sea
  • Kreuzen im Geiranger-Fjord
  • Alesund

Ålesund on Norway's west coast is the Art Nouveau city par excellence. Completely rebuilt in just three years after a great fire in 1904, Ålesund is regarded today as a unique architectural ensemble - with views from Aksla Hill over the tangle of islands.

  • Nordfjordeid

At the head of the Eidsfjord, a branch of the Nordfjord in western Norway, lies Nordfjordeid in Vestland county. The Viking ship house Sagastad with its replica of the Myklebust ship recalls the town's importance in the Viking era, when one of the largest known Viking ships in Norway was burned here as a royal burial.

  • Flam

Flåm sits at the innermost end of the Aurlandsfjord - a side arm of the Sognefjord, the longest and deepest fjord in the world. The Flåm Railway, one of the steepest adhesion railways in the world, winds up through 20 tunnels to the Hardangervidda plateau. The UNESCO-listed fjord and the Nærøyfjord passage are among Norway's most spectacular experiences.

The Ship

Le Commandant Charcot

Le Commandant Charcot is the world's only luxury icebreaker carrying passengers. PC2 ice class, LNG hybrid propulsion, 270 guests. The ship reaches the geographic North Pole and penetrates deep into Antarctic pack ice - places previously reserved for research icebreakers.

In northern Europe, Le Commandant Charcot sails along the Norwegian coast and to the fjords of Iceland - polar landscapes that gain a new dimension from the ship.
