Which cover a skipper needs
If you charter a yacht without a skipper, you take on responsibilities – and risks – that go beyond the standard charter policy. Three elements matter most for skippers:
Skipper liability
Covers damage you cause to third parties or to the chartered yacht as the person in charge. Strongly recommended for bareboat charter.
Deposit cover
Covers the excess or the security deposit if the charter yacht is damaged – so your deposit stays protected.
Charter cancellation
Applies if you have to cancel the trip – including sudden illness of the skipper.
What matters
Which cover makes sense depends on whether you sail as skipper yourself or have booked a yacht with crew. For a yacht with crew, trip cancellation is the priority; for a bareboat charter, skipper liability and deposit cover are key.
