Norwegian Fjords: Whales and Northern Lights · Nov 2026
Traditional sailing, hands on
What makes the voyage of the Segelschoner Meander to Northern Europe special?
Through the long winter nights in the far north of Norway, we keep watch for the most spellbinding displays of the northern lights. By day we take in the wild scenery and respectfully observe the varied wildlife.
The fish-rich fjords north and east of Tromsø draw vast shoals of herring in winter - and with them orcas (killer whales) and humpback whales, which hunt here from October to February. Above the coastal cliffs soars the white-tailed eagle, Europe's largest bird of prey. Harbour seals and grey seals bask on skerries and rocks, and with a little luck you may also spot otters along the stony shoreline.
With no more than twelve guests aboard the Meander, we are a small, intimate group. The polar night lies over us - yet the December snow reflects what little light there is so strongly that it stays surprisingly bright even in the evening and night hours. Whenever weather and ice conditions allow, we go ashore in quiet bays and set out on snowshoe walks through the wintry stillness.
In the evenings we gather in the cosy saloon, where expedition leader Birgit Lutz shares stories from her wealth of experience: of polar research, of the behaviour of whales, and sometimes from her books. Unless the northern lights begin to dance outside - in which case everyone is back on deck.
