The Voyage

Brest → Tromsø

This eleven-night transit voyage aboard Le Lapérouse runs in late winter from Brest in Brittany via the Netherlands up to Tromsø above the Arctic Circle. The 184-guest Explorer-class ship, with her ice-strengthened hull and sixteen Zodiacs, is built for shifting climate zones. In February northern Norway lies in its late polar-night phase, with short daylight hours and good chances of seeing the aurora. The Blue Eye underwater lounge in the bow remains accessible whatever the weather. Full board, beverages and excursions are part of the premium all-inclusive concept.

Route highlights

  • Brest: Atlantic port of Brittany with the Océanopolis aquarium and the sheltered Rade.
  • Oostende: Belgian seaside resort with a Belle Époque promenade and works by James Ensor.
  • Amsterdam: Dutch capital with the canal-belt World Heritage site and the Rijksmuseum.
  • Stavanger: southern Norwegian port with the old timber town of Gamle Stavanger and the gateway to the Lysefjord.
  • Bergen: Hanseatic city with the Bryggen World Heritage waterfront and the harbour fish market.
  • Ålesund: art-nouveau city with a view from Mount Aksla over the island spits.
  • Trondheim: former royal city with Nidaros Cathedral, Europe's northernmost Gothic cathedral.
  • Leknes: gateway to the Lofoten with their distinctive jagged peaks and red rorbu cabins.
  • Tromsø: Arctic gateway above the polar circle with the Arctic Cathedral.

  • Brest · Embarkation

Brest sits at the western end of Brittany on France's Atlantic coast and boasts one of the finest natural harbours in Europe, the Rade de Brest. The city has been France's main naval base since the 17th century and hosts the international tall ship gathering Les Tonnerres de Brest with over 1,000 historic vessels every four years.

  • At sea
  • Ostende
  • Amsterdam

Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands, built on 90 islands and threaded with 165 canals from the 17th-century Golden Age that form a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Rijksmuseum with Rembrandt's Night Watch, the Van Gogh Museum and the Anne Frank House define the city's cultural fabric.

  • At sea
  • Stavanger

Stavanger on Norway's southwestern coast combines picturesque white timber houses in Gamle Stavanger with a modern energy capital. The harbour is a starting point for trips into the nearby Lysefjord with its famous Preikestolen.

  • Bergen

Bergen is the gateway to Norway's fjords. The colourful wooden houses of Bryggen on the harbour (UNESCO) tell of the Hanseatic era; Mount Fløyen with its funicular offers panoramic views over the seven-hill city.

  • Alesund

Ålesund on Norway's west coast is the Art Nouveau city par excellence. Completely rebuilt in just three years after a great fire in 1904, Ålesund is regarded today as a unique architectural ensemble - with views from Aksla Hill over the tangle of islands.

  • Trondheim

Trondheim sits on the Trondheim Fjord and is Norway's third-largest city, with around 210,000 inhabitants. The Gothic Nidaros Cathedral above the tomb of Saint Olav is regarded as the national shrine.

  • At sea
  • Überquerung des nördlichen Polarkreises
  • Leknes, Lofoten

Main town of Vestvågøy island in Norway's Lofoten archipelago, far above the Arctic Circle. Surrounded by jagged peaks and long sandy beaches such as Uttakleiv, Leknes is the gateway for hikes and winter aurora experiences.
