from/to Dakar to West Africa & Cape Verde
Eight nights aboard Le Lapérouse take you from Dakar into the UNESCO biosphere reserve of the Bijagós Archipelago off Guinea-Bissau, one of West Africa's most untouched island mazes. Some eighty islands, many of them uninhabited, form a mosaic of mangroves, sandbanks and silent lagoons. You encounter the matrilineal Bijagós culture and observe saltwater hippos, nesting marine turtles and thousands of waterbirds. The marina and sixteen Zodiacs of Le Lapérouse allow landings where regular ships cannot reach. The voyage returns to Dakar, the gateway to West Africa.
Route highlights
- Dakar: Lively Senegalese capital and gateway to the UNESCO island of Gorée with the Maison des Esclaves.
- Carache: Northern Bijagós island with palm groves and traditional fishing villages.
- Caravela: Sandy beaches and mangrove channels, ideal for Zodiac excursions among waterbirds.
- Bolama: Decaying Portuguese colonial architecture under tropical vegetation.
- Bissagos Archipelago: UNESCO biosphere reserve home to saltwater hippos, marine turtles and a rich bird life.

Dakar · Embarkation
Dakar is the westernmost capital of Africa, set on the Cap-Vert peninsula. The island of Gorée off the coast (UNESCO) recalls the darkest chapter of West African history as a slave-trading post; the African Renaissance Monument is the tallest statue in Africa.

Bolama is an island in the Bissagos archipelago off the Atlantic coast of Guinea-Bissau and served as the colonial capital of Portuguese Guinea from 1879 to 1941. The decaying Portuguese colonial architecture of the main town is slowly being reclaimed by tropical jungle, creating a ghostly atmosphere.
