The Voyage

Antarctica & Tierra del Fuego from/to Ushuaia

Late-summer peninsula itinerary aboard L'Austral: by February the penguin chicks have come through their first weeks, wildlife is active and whale sightings increase. From Ushuaia the ship crosses the Drake Passage to the Antarctic Peninsula, with landings made in line with IAATO standards. The vessel remains an Ice Class 1C ship, dense pack-ice is not part of this route, instead open ice-filled bays and drifting floes. French elegance and a naturalist team accompanying every landing shape life on board.

Route highlights

  • Ushuaia: Gateway to Antarctica, starting point of the ten-day peninsula loop.
  • Drake Passage: Crossing between Cape Horn and the South Shetlands, often a touch calmer in late summer than at the height of the season.
  • Antarctic Peninsula: Landings at penguin colonies and bays such as Wilhelmina Bay or Paradise Bay subject to ice and wind.
  • Whale watching: February is a focal point for humpback sightings along the peninsula.
  • Zodiac programme: Landings and water-based outings led by the expedition team.
  • Naturalist team: Briefings put the geology and wildlife of the peninsula into context.

Ushuaia

The exact route is set by the expedition team on site, depending on ice and weather:

Ushuaia Drake Passage Half Moon Island Deception Island Cuverville Island Neko Harbour Paradise Bay Lemaire Channel
8 ports · route · approx. 1,370 nautical miles
  • Ushuaia · Embarkation

Ushuaia in Argentina calls itself "the end of the world" and lies on the Beagle Channel, just short of Cape Horn. The town is the most important starting point for Antarctic expeditions and is surrounded by the wild landscapes of Tierra del Fuego National Park.

  • At sea
  • Antarktische Halbinsel

The Antarctic Peninsula is the northernmost reach of the white continent and the classic goal of expedition voyages. Amid glaciers, drifting icebergs and black volcanic shores live gentoo, Adélie and chinstrap penguins, seals and whales.

Destination

The Ship

L'Austral

L'Austral belongs to Ponant's Odyssée class: 264 guests, ice-reinforced hull, French cuisine with wine at dinner. Large enough for comfort on the open sea, small enough for fjords, pack ice boundaries and islands without a harbour.

In Antarctica, the ice-reinforced hull opens passages available to few ships - penguin colonies, icebergs and a silence found only at the end of the world.

Antarctica

Travelling to Earth's last untouched continent

Antarctica is the last continent on Earth without permanent human settlement - a unique ecosystem of ice, ocean and wildlife protected by international agreement.

The Antarctic Treaty (in force since 1961) dedicates the continent to peace and science and prohibits any military or commercial exploitation. The IAATO (International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators) translates these principles into practical visitor rules: defined landing sites, maximum group sizes, strict biosecurity, minimum wildlife distances, no souvenirs.

All shipping partners with whom we work in Antarctica are IAATO members and have committed to these rules. Their crews are trained accordingly, expedition teams document each landing, vessels meet ice class and emission requirements.

At the same time, every guest contributes: please follow the briefings, keep your distance from wildlife, leave nothing behind and take nothing - not even a small stone. Only then can we, as visitors, preserve what makes this region unique.
