How the route could go:
-
Azores / Faial · Embarkation
Faial (Azores) is the "Blue Island" - famous for the blue hydrangeas that cover whole fields in summer. The Caldeira volcanic crater at its centre and the legendary "Peter Cafe Sport" in Horta (the Atlantic yachting world's meeting point) make Faial the most atmospheric of the Azores. On Horta's harbour pier, every crew has left a painted panel for generations - the colourful marina wall is considered one of the world's largest maritime artworks, said to bring good luck for the onward voyage.
-
São Jorge
São Jorge is one of the central Azores islands, narrow and long. The "Fajãs" - flat coastal plains at the foot of the steep coast - are a UNESCO biosphere reserve. São Jorge is home to the famous Queijo São Jorge (matured cow's milk cheese).
-
Pico, Faial · Disembarkation
Pico (Azores) carries the highest mountain in Portugal - the 2,351 m Pico volcano, often snow-capped. The island is UNESCO World Heritage for its unique vineyards in lava-stone parcels right by the Atlantic. Once a centre of whaling, Pico is today one of the world's finest places to watch sperm whales, dolphins and other marine mammals in the wild. Near Madalena the Gruta das Torres, the longest lava cave in Portugal, runs some five kilometres deep into the cooled volcanic rock.
The route of a sailing voyage may change without giving rise to mutual claims.
