Late-summer peninsula itinerary aboard L'Austral: by February the penguin chicks have come through their first weeks, wildlife is active and whale sightings increase. From Ushuaia the ship crosses the Drake Passage to the Antarctic Peninsula, with landings made in line with IAATO standards. The vessel remains an Ice Class 1C ship, dense pack-ice is not part of this route, instead open ice-filled bays and drifting floes. The Antarctic Treaty (in force since 1961) dedicates the continent to peace and science and prohibits any military or commercial exploitation. The IAATO (International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators) translates these principles into practical visitor rules: defined landing sites, maximum group sizes, strict biosecurity, minimum wildlife distances, no souvenirs.
