Isla de Coiba off Panama's Pacific coast is a UNESCO World Heritage site and Panama's largest national park. A penal colony until 2004, the island is today a refuge for untouched tropical forest, schools of hammerhead sharks and more than 760 fish species.

Isla Iguana
Off the Pacific coast of Panama's Azuero Peninsula lies the small Isla Iguana as a nature reserve, only 90 hectares in size. The reef around the island hosts manta rays and, in spring, migrating humpback whales from the Antarctic, while large colonies of frigatebirds nest ashore and the namesake iguanas bask in the sun.

Playa del Muerto
Playa del Muerto ("Beach of the Dead") on Santa Cruz (Galápagos) is a nesting site of Pacific green sea turtles. The lonely bay with its fine sand and turquoise lagoon can only be reached by boat.

As the largest island of the Las Perlas archipelago, Isla del Rey lies in the Pacific Gulf of Panama off the mainland capital. Once a centre of 16th-century Spanish pearl fishing, today it hosts small fishing villages such as San Miguel, pristine mangrove forests and humpback whale breeding grounds between July and October.
