  Kicker Rock (León Dormido) is a split volcanic cone rising from the sea near San Cristóbal. Hammerhead sharks, sea lions, Galápagos turtles and rays swim through the channel between the rocks - a diver's paradise.

  Prince Philip's Steps (Genovesa)

  Prince Philip's Steps on Genovesa are a lava-rock stairway leading to a plateau that astonishes: tens of thousands of storm petrels, short-eared owls and red-footed boobies nest here. The owls hunt the petrels by day, animal behaviour that can scarcely be observed anywhere else in the world.

  Darwin Bay (Genovesa)

  Darwin Bay is a collapsed caldera the ship can sail straight into. The beach is dotted with red frigatebirds, red-footed boobies and Nazca boobies - all without any fear of humans. Snorkelling brings encounters with hammerhead sharks.

  North Seymour

  North Seymour is one of the most species-rich small islands in the Galápagos. Blue-footed boobies perform their characteristic courtship dance right beside the walking trail, while frigatebirds with inflated red throat pouches sit on the bushes - all at arm's length.

  Sullivan Bay (Santiago)

  Sullivan Bay on Santiago shows recently solidified pahoehoe lava - a smooth, wave-like surface like a frozen sea. Marine iguanas, sea lions and Galápagos penguins populate the shores of this dramatic volcanic landscape.

  Bolívar Canal

  The Bolívar Channel separates the Galápagos islands of Isabela and Fernandina. The cold, upwelling Cromwell Current makes this strait one of the archipelago's richest waters, frequented by whales, dolphins, Galápagos penguins and flightless cormorants.

  Punta Mangle (Fernandina)

  Punta Mangle lies on Fernandina's east coast and offers calm mangrove channels where flightless cormorants and Galápagos penguins can be seen on the water. The clear waters allow for excellent snorkelling.

  Punta Moreno (Isabela)

  Punta Moreno features solidified lava fields with flamingos in crater lakes and marine iguanas in the lava fissures. The contrast between the black lava field and the emerald green water of the crater lakes is unique.

  Santa Cruz Highlands

  The Santa Cruz Highlands are home to the El Chato tortoise reserve and free-ranging giant tortoises in their natural habitat. The lava tunnels - underground caves formed by lava flow - can be explored on foot. In the rainy season the highlands stay lush and green.

  Fausto Llerena Breeding Center (Puerto Ayora)

  The breeding centre at the Charles Darwin Research Station on Santa Cruz raises Galápagos giant tortoises for reintroduction to their home islands. It was also home, until 2012, to Lonesome George, the last tortoise of Pinta Island.

  Gardner Bay on Española hosts one of the largest sea lion colonies in the Galápagos and is a nesting ground for the waved albatross. Snorkelling in the turquoise water brings encounters with playful sea lions.

  Punta Suarez on Española hosts the world's largest colony of waved albatross and endemic Hispaniola marine iguanas. The "Blowhole" - a hole in the lava cliffs that shoots water metres into the air - is a spectacular natural spectacle.

  Isla Bartolomé

  Bartolomé is the most photographed island in the Galápagos: Pinnacle Rock - a basalt spike rising from the sea - is the archipelago's iconic motif. Galápagos penguins, hammerhead sharks and sea turtles populate the waters.

  Buccaneer Cove (Santiago)

  This sheltered bay on the north-western coast of Santiago in the Galápagos once served buccaneers and whalers as an anchorage. Rust-red tuff cliffs and striking rock pinnacles line the shore, where sea lions, marine iguanas and seabirds gather.

  Punta Vicente Roca lies at the northern tip of Isabela and offers dramatic cliffs with caves where blue-footed boobies nest. In the clear water below swim Galápagos penguins, sea lions and hammerhead sharks.

  Punta Espinoza (Fernandina)

  This headland on Fernandina, the youngest and most volcanically active island in the Galápagos, hosts one of the largest colonies of marine iguanas on earth. Across the black lava fields rises the La Cumbre volcano, and flightless cormorants, Galápagos penguins and sea lions share the shore.

  Champion Islet off Floreana (Galápagos) is one of the last remaining homes of the Floreana mockingbird - a species Charles Darwin encountered on Floreana itself, where it has since gone extinct. Snorkelling and diving around the rocky island are first-class.

  Punta Cormorant offers a green-shimmering olivine sand beach and flamingos in a brackish lagoon behind it. The name is misleading: there are hardly any cormorants here - but endemic giant tortoises of the Floreana subspecies.

  Dragon Hill in the north of Santa Cruz owes its name to the yellow land iguanas that live on its slopes. A trail passes a brackish lagoon that often draws flamingos and opens up broad views across the surrounding islands.

  Isla Guy Fawkes is a group of small rocky islets north-west of Santa Cruz, known for its abundant sea lion colonies. The name dates back to the British buccaneer era. Snorkelling here allows encounters with hammerhead sharks and rays.

  Bahía Bowditch (Santa Cruz)

  Bahía Bowditch lies on the northern coast of the Galápagos island of Santa Cruz, offering a calm anchorage with seagrass meadows for green sea turtles. Sea lions, Galápagos penguins and reef sharks are frequent snorkelling companions, while pelicans nest in the mangroves.
