The Voyage

Valletta to Lisbon

10 nights under white sails aboard the Royal Clipper, from Valletta to Lissabon. The voyage takes you through the Central America with rainforest down to the waterline, offshore islands and bays alive with whales and dolphins.

Ports of call

  • Cagliari
  • Maó
  • Palma de Mallorca
  • Cartagena (ES)
  • Malaga
  • Gibraltar
  • Portimao

Life on board

The Royal Clipper, with five masts and 42 sails, is one of the largest fully rigged sailing ships in the world. Life aboard is sporty and unhurried: no dress code, open seating in the two-storey dining room, three pools including a glass-floor pool above the Captain Nemo Lounge. Guests are welcome to climb the rigging with the crew, take the helm beside the captain or enjoy the bowsprit net suspended above the water.

Route Highlights

  • Cagliari (Sardinia): Roman amphitheatre and fortified Castello old town above the harbour
  • Maó (Menorca): second longest natural harbour in the world after Pearl Harbor
  • Palma de Mallorca: Gothic cathedral La Seu with Gaudí interior right by the harbour
  • Cartagena: Punic-Roman port city with an excavated ancient theatre
  • Gibraltar: Rock of the Barbary macaques and passage between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic
  • Portimão (Algarve): starting point for the rocky coast and the Benagil Cave

Early booking advantage: Voyages in 2027 fill quickly - premium cabins are often reserved 18-24 months in advance. An early booking enquiry is non-binding and secures your preferred cabin category.

Disembarkation

Lisbon

How the route could go:

Valletta Cagliari Mahon Palma de Mallorca Cartagena (ES) Malaga Gibraltar Portimao Lisbon
9 ports · route · approx. 1,330 nautical miles
  • Valletta · Embarkation

The capital of Malta is one of the smallest yet richest capitals in the world. A UNESCO World Heritage baroque city, it has more museums and churches per square kilometre than any other city; Grand Harbour is one of the finest natural harbours in the Mediterranean.

  • Cagliari

Cagliari, capital of Sardinia, is crowned by its Pisan citadel overlooking the Molentargius lagoon. Excursions lead into the Gennargentu National Park, to the Nuragic complex of Su Nuraxi (UNESCO World Heritage) and to the white beaches of the Costa del Sud.

  • Mahon
  • Palma de Mallorca

La Seu Cathedral - one of the most striking Gothic cathedrals in Europe - stands right by Palma's harbour. The Old Town with its noble palaces, Arab baths and Arab Quarter brings together three millennia of history.

  • Cartagena (ES)

Cartagena has one of the most important Roman harbours in the Mediterranean. The Teatro Romano, Moorish fortifications and an Old Town with Phoenician, Carthaginian and Roman layers turn the city into a dense open-air museum.

  • Malaga

Málaga, birthplace of Pablo Picasso, is one of the oldest cities in Europe, with over 2,800 years of history. The Picasso Museum, the Moorish Gibralfaro castle and the lively harbour promenade make for a culturally rich half-day.

  • Gibraltar

Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory at the foot of the striking limestone rock that guards the strait. The Barbary macaques (Europe's only wild monkey population), St Michael's stalactite cave and the view across to Africa 14 km away make Gibraltar unique.

  • Portimao

Portimão on the Algarve was a Phoenician settlement and is today one of Portugal's best-known sardine-grilling spots. Praia da Rocha, the spectacular cliffs of Ponta da Piedade in Lagos and the hinterland of cork oak forests define the region.

  • Lisbon · Disembarkation

Built on seven hills, Lisbon combines southern European joie de vivre with a great age of discovery. Vasco da Gama and other navigators set out into the unknown from the Belém Tower - yellow trams and melancholy fado still tell of that era.

The route of a sailing voyage may change without giving rise to mutual claims.

Shore Excursions

Water sports – kayaking, snorkelling, paddleboarding, windsurfing – are complimentary directly from the ship at every anchorage. Details on available shore excursions for each port of call are listed in the route overview above.
