  Marigot is the capital of the French side of St. Martin. Caribbean market stalls, French bakeries and the ruins of Fort Louis above the harbour combine Gallic style with tropical atmosphere. From Fort Louis the view sweeps over Anguilla, the Simpson Bay lagoon and the green hills; a stroll from Marina Fort-Louis through the market passes 19th-century creole houses, luxury boutiques and artists' studios.

• Sandy Island, Anguilla

  Sandy Island is a tiny, uninhabited sand cay off the coast of Carriacou in the Caribbean. White coral sand, turquoise water and palm trees make it a classic postcard scene.

• Virgin Gorda (BVI)

  Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands is known for "The Baths" - a natural maze of huge granite boulders and hidden sea pools with turquoise water, one of the most fascinating natural phenomena in the Caribbean. The island's hills offer hiking trails with views over the Sir Francis Drake Channel. At the eastern tip, Copper Mine National Park preserves the ruins of an old copper mine right at the water's edge, while around The Baths a maze of grottoes, pools and natural bathing basins opens up between the volcanic boulders.

• Norman Island (BVI)

  Norman Island in the British Virgin Islands is said to have inspired Robert Louis Stevenson's "Treasure Island". The uninhabited island offers cave diving in the sea caves and one of the Caribbean's most popular floating bars. Off the "pirate island" you can explore the caves of Treasure Point, take a guided kayak tour from Peter Island, and climb the hill for sweeping views over the Sir Francis Drake Channel; the beach bars serve grilled fish, seafood and cocktails.

• Cooper Island

  Cooper Island is a small island, just under three kilometres long, in the British Virgin Islands in the eastern Caribbean. The Manchioneel Bay anchorage is a classic stop on the sailing route between Tortola and Norman Island, while off its southern tip lie the dive sites of Cistern Rocks and the RMS Rhone wreck. Steep shores and surf meet along the coast of this unspoilt volcanic island, and a walk at sunset leads through tropical greenery alive with birdsong.

• Jost Van Dyke

  Jost van Dyke (British Virgin Islands) is barely 8 square kilometres in size, yet famous far beyond the Caribbean. The legendary "Soggy Dollar Bar" at White Bay Beach - where you swim ashore from your anchorage and pay with wet notes - is regarded as the most laid-back beach in the world. At lively White Bay, coconut palms sway over white sand and crystal-clear water, while iguanas, mongooses, pelicans and blue herons have made the hilly island their home - a paradise for photographers.

• Beef Island

  Beef Island is a small island in the British Virgin Islands east of Tortola, linked to the main island by the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge. It hosts Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport, the main airport of the British overseas territory in the Caribbean. Trellis Bay draws visitors with a small market, café and beach bar as well as Aragorn's art gallery, full of Caribbean craftwork - jewellery, sculptures and hand-woven baskets and calabash bowls.

• Dog Island, Anguilla

  Dog Island is an uninhabited coral limestone island about 13 kilometres north-west of Anguilla in the eastern Caribbean. The island ranks among the most important seabird breeding sites in the Caribbean, including one of the largest known populations of the sooty tern. Around its low cliffs and sandy beaches there is also swimming and kayaking to be had.
