The Voyage

Valparaíso to Ushuaia

Fourteen nights aboard Le Lyrial take you from Valparaíso through the Chilean fjords down to Ushuaia, the southernmost port of Argentina. This 184-guest sistership of the Ponant Classic fleet, with marina platform and zodiac fleet, allows landings in remote bays that remain out of reach for larger cruise ships. You experience calving glaciers, island archipelagos and the silent Patagonia of the channels, combined with premium all-inclusive service and French-inspired onboard culture. The route crosses the Strait of Magellan and rounds Cape Horn before the Beagle Channel leads to Ushuaia.

Route highlights

  • Valparaíso: UNESCO harbour city with colourful hillsides and links to Santiago de Chile.
  • Quemchi (Chiloé): traditional stilt houses (palafitos) and the 16 UNESCO wooden churches of the Chiloé archipelago.
  • Tortel: famous village built on wooden walkways instead of streets, nestled among Patagonian fjords.
  • Estero de las Montañas: glacier-fed fjord with zodiac exploration at the ice edge.
  • Garibaldi Glacier: spectacular tidewater glacier in the Cordillera Darwin.
  • Cape Horn: the mythical southern tip of South America, weather permitting with a landing at the albatross monument.
  • Beagle Channel to Ushuaia: Glacier Alley with views of hanging glaciers and waterfalls.

  • Valparaiso · Embarkation

Valparaíso sits on Chile's Pacific coast some 120 kilometres north-west of Santiago and is Chile's most important container port. Its historic old town, with still-running funicular railways, mural art and colourful hillside neighbourhoods, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

  • At sea
  • Quemchi, Insel Chiloé

On the north-east coast of Chile's Pacific island of Chiloé, this small fishing village nestles on a sheltered bay opposite a cluster of small islets. Known as the birthplace of writer Francisco Coloane, whose work has made the region's maritime tales part of world literature.

  • Kreuzen im Pulluche-Kanal
  • Tortel

Caleta Tortel sits in Chilean Patagonia between two great ice fields on a sheltered bay. The village has no streets at all and is connected entirely by cypress-wood boardwalks on stilts.

  • At sea
  • Pio-XI-Gletscher

The Pío XI Glacier, also known as the Brüggen Glacier, is the largest glacier in South America, fed by the Southern Patagonian Ice Field in Chile. Its calving front, more than three kilometres wide, spills into the fjord and is one of the few glaciers worldwide still advancing.

  • El-Brujo-Gletscher
  • Skua-Gletscher (Kreuzen)
  • Estero las Montanas
  • Kreuzen in der Magellanstraße
  • Agostini-Gletscher
  • Islas Tuckers

In the Strait of Magellan in southern Chile lie the Tuckers Islands as a small archipelago in the Magallanes province. They are home to a significant Magellanic penguin breeding colony with thousands of nesting pairs and are mainly visited by expedition ships along the classic Patagonian route between Punta Arenas and Ushuaia.

  • Garibaldi-Gletscher

In Chilean Patagonia, the Garibaldi Glacier descends from the Cordillera Darwin range right down to the sea. It calves into a side arm of the Beagle Channel and ranks among South America's most impressive tidewater glaciers, framed by snow-capped peaks and dense sub-Antarctic Magellanic forest.

  • Kreuzen um Kap Hoorn
  • Puerto Williams

Puerto Williams on Navarino Island is considered the southernmost town in the world and sits on the Beagle Channel with views of the Cordillera Darwin. The small Chilean town is a starting point for tours to Tierra del Fuego and Cape Horn.
