Port town on Namibia's south-western Atlantic coast, wedged between rocks and the Namib Desert. The German colonial Art Nouveau houses and the nearby ghost town of Kolmanskop, swallowed by desert sand, give the town its distinctive face.

In 1488 Portuguese navigator Bartolomeu Dias became the first European to land in the bay, an event documented in detail at the Bartolomeu Dias Museum with a faithful 1980s caravel replica.
