The Voyage

Walvis Bay to Richards Bay

Eleven nights aboard Le Dumont d'Urville link Namibia's spectacular Atlantic coast with subtropical KwaZulu-Natal. From Walvis Bay you follow the coast via Lüderitz, Cape Town and the Garden Route through to Durban and Richards Bay. Highlights include the shifting dunes around the ghost town of Kolmanskop, Table Mountain and Robben Island, the whale watching of Hermanus and the fynbos-clad mountains around Mossel Bay. Port Elizabeth opens up Addo Elephant National Park, while Durban offers the Indian-influenced port metropolis. With 184 guests, a marina, sixteen Zodiacs and the Blue Eye lounge, the voyage combines intimate expedition calls with premium comfort.

Route highlights

  • Walvis Bay: Flamingo lagoon and gateway to the Namib desert with Sandwich Harbour.
  • Lüderitz: Wilhelmine colonial architecture and the abandoned diamond town of Kolmanskop in the shifting dunes.
  • Cape Town: Table Mountain, the Cape of Good Hope and a boat trip to the UNESCO memorial site of Robben Island.
  • Hermanus: Whale-watching capital of Walker Bay, with the season of southern right whales and humpbacks off the coast.
  • Mossel Bay: Start of the Garden Route with long beaches and the story of Bartolomeu Dias.
  • Port Elizabeth: Gateway to Addo Elephant National Park and the wildlife of the Eastern Cape.
  • Durban / Richards Bay: Indian-influenced Gold Coast and gateway to the iSimangaliso Wetland Park with crocodiles, rhinos and hippos.

Early booking advantage: Voyages in 2027 fill quickly - premium cabins are often reserved 18-24 months in advance. An early booking enquiry is non-binding and secures your preferred cabin category.

7 of 8 ports located · approx. 12,390 nautical miles
  • Walvis Bay · Embarkation

Walvis Bay on Namibia's Atlantic coast is the country's most important deep-water harbour. Just offshore lies a lagoon with great flocks of flamingos, with the Namib Desert beginning behind it.

  • Lüderitz

Port town on Namibia's south-western Atlantic coast, wedged between rocks and the Namib Desert. The German colonial Art Nouveau houses and the nearby ghost town of Kolmanskop, swallowed by desert sand, give the town its distinctive face.

  • At sea
  • Kapstadt

South Africa's second-largest city on the Atlantic, framed by the flat plateau of Table Mountain and the rocky Lion's Head. The Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, the Cape of Good Hope and the wine estates inland define the experience.

  • Hermanus

On South Africa's Walker Bay south-east of Cape Town lies the coastal town of Hermanus on the Atlantic. It is regarded as the world's best land-based spot for watching southern right whales calving offshore between June and November, and the annual Hermanus Whale Festival in September celebrates the giants' return.

  • Mossel Bay

On the Garden Route on South Africa's southern coast lies Mossel Bay in the Western Cape province on the Indian Ocean. In 1488 Portuguese navigator Bartolomeu Dias became the first European to land in the bay, an event documented in detail at the Bartolomeu Dias Museum with a faithful 1980s caravel replica.

  • Port Elizabeth (Bequia)

Port Elizabeth on Bequia (Grenadines) is the most charming Caribbean harbour for yachts. The small bay with wooden schooner boatyards on the beach, the turtle conservation programme and the whaling tradition make Port Elizabeth unique.

  • At sea
  • Durban

Durban lies on South Africa's east coast on the Indian Ocean in the KwaZulu-Natal province and operates the largest and busiest port on the subcontinent. The city blends a Zulu cultural hinterland, the largest community of Indian descent outside India and the long surfing beachfront of the Golden Mile.
