Lavrion (Athens) · Embarkation
Lavrion (also Lavrio) sits at the south-eastern tip of Attica, some 60 kilometres from Athens, and is today one of Greece's foremost sailing harbours. Most Cyclades passages set off from its modern marinas, as the Meltemi wind sets in more favourably here than in the Saronic Gulf. Lavrion mattered in antiquity too: the silver mines of Laurion funded the Athenian fleet that defeated the Persians at Salamis in 480 BC. A few kilometres to the south, Cape Sounion rises above the sea, crowned by the Temple of Poseidon, whose marble columns glow golden at sunset.

Patmos
On Patmos, the apostle John wrote the Book of Revelation in the Cave of the Apocalypse. The UNESCO-protected Monastery of Saint John the Theologian rises above the white-and-blue Chora - one of the most important Christian sites in the eastern Mediterranean.

Symi
Symi surprises with one of the most beautiful harbours in the Aegean: step by step, neoclassical houses in ochre, terracotta and garnet climb up the hill. The island belongs to the Dodecanese and is accessible from Rhodes. The Panormitis monastery in the south is an important Orthodox pilgrimage destination.

Amorgos
Amorgos is the easternmost of the Cyclades and perhaps the most dramatic, its steep mountain flanks plunging straight into a deep blue sea. Pressed into a cliff face 300 metres high, the monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa gleams dazzling white above the water; founded in 1088, it is still home to a handful of monks. On the coast below lies the bay of Agia Anna, immortalised by Luc Besson in his 1988 film The Big Blue. High above it all stands the Chora, a labyrinth of whitewashed lanes and old windmills that seems to have forgotten time.

Delos is one of the most sacred sites of antiquity: in Greek mythology the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis, and once the religious and commercial centre of the Aegean. Today the uninhabited island is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a unique open-air archaeological park.

Paros combines Cycladic architecture with a relaxed atmosphere: the village of Naoussa with its Venetian harbour, the Byzantine Katapoliani church and crystal-clear water for swimming make Paros the most charming secondary destination in the Cyclades.

Hydra
Hydra is one of the few islands in the world without cars - donkeys, muleteers and water taxis are the only forms of transport. The historic harbour town of whitewashed captains' houses was one of the most important trading centres of the Aegean in the 19th century.
