The Voyage

Venice to Nice (Villefranche)

Ten days along the jewels of the Italian coast, from Venice through the Adriatic, Ionian and Tyrrhenian Seas to Nice. Your Ponant Classic sister ship for 184 guests links Venetian heritage, Byzantine mosaics and Ligurian elegance. Premium all-inclusive service, a marina platform and Zodiacs open up Adriatic gems, southern Italy and the Tuscan Riviera. Between Ravenna, Taormina and Portofino the full range of Italian coastal culture unfolds. In Villefranche the voyage ends in front of the old town of Nice, mirrored by the Côte d'Azur.

Route highlights

  • Ravenna: UNESCO city of Byzantine mosaics with San Vitale and the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia.
  • Otranto: Italy's easternmost town with its Norman cathedral and the Tree of Life mosaic floor.
  • Taormina: Sicilian clifftop town with its ancient Greek theatre and views of Mount Etna.
  • Amalfi: Namesake town of the UNESCO Amalfi Coast with its Arab-Norman cathedral.
  • Porto Santo Stefano: Elegant harbour of the Monte Argentario peninsula on the Tuscan coast.
  • Portofino: Pastel-coloured fishing village on the Ligurian Riviera with its protected headland.
  • Nice (Villefranche): Deep natural bay on the Côte d'Azur with views of the old town of Nice.

  • Venedig · Embarkation

Built on 118 islands and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987 - Venice is a masterpiece of human ingenuity. The Grand Canal, palazzo facades, gondoliers and the view from St Mark's Square across the lagoon are among the most iconic images in Europe.

  • Ravenna

On Italy's Adriatic coast in Emilia-Romagna, this city served as capital of the Western Roman Empire in the 5th century and later as a Byzantine exarchate. Eight early Christian and Byzantine mosaic ensembles, including San Vitale and the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, are inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage.

  • Ancona

Ancona is the capital of Italy's Marche region and the major Adriatic port between Venice and Bari. The city sits on a hook-shaped promontory that gave it its Greek name Ankon, and it features the well-preserved Roman Arch of Trajan at the harbour.

  • At sea
  • Otranto

Otranto on Puglia's easternmost point is Italy's easternmost harbour. The Norman cathedral with a huge floor mosaic from the 12th century, the pale-blue Adriatic lagoons of Laghi Alimini and the "Turkish Tower" (recalling the Ottoman siege of 1480) are highlights.

  • Taormina, Sizilien

Taormina sits on a rocky spur above the Ionian Sea and is regarded as the loveliest spot in Sicily. The Greek-Roman theatre with Mount Etna in the background is one of the most spectacular ancient settings; ships moor at Giardini-Naxos at the foot of the hill.

  • Amalfi

Amalfi lies at the foot of a sheer coastline regarded as one of the most beautiful in Europe. Excursions lead to the "Path of the Gods" (Sentiero degli Dei) with panoramic views over the gulf and coast, and to nearby Ravello with the gardens of Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone.

  • Porto Santo Stefano

Porto Santo Stefano lies on Monte Argentario and is the gateway to the Tuscan archipelago islands of Giglio and Giannutri. The nearby Maremma nature parks, the outstanding seafood and the low level of tourism make Porto Santo Stefano the most elegant insider tip in Italy.

  • Livorno

Livorno is the port for Florence and Pisa. Excursions lead to Florence (80 km) with the Uffizi, the Duomo and the Ponte Vecchio - capital of the Renaissance; or to Pisa with the famous Leaning Tower on the Field of Miracles (Campo dei Miracoli).

  • Portofino

The most elegant fishing village on the Riviera Ligure and a favourite anchorage for the international yachting world: pastel houses around the harbour basin, small churches on the hill, and walking trails through the Monte Portofino nature park.
