The Voyage

from/to Lisbon along the Iberian Atlantic coast

This seven-night round trip aboard Le Boréal combines a total solar eclipse at sea with the harbour cities of the Iberian peninsula. From Lisbon you sail along the Algarve and the Andalusian coast, with a sea day in the eclipse path and a final call at Figueira da Foz. Accompanied by Smithsonian Journeys, on-board lectures deepen the astronomical event, framed by the premium all-inclusive concept and French refinement.

Route highlights

  • Lisbon: Atlantic capital on the Tagus with the Belém Tower and Jerónimos Monastery.
  • Portimao: Algarve harbour, gateway to the limestone cliffs and sea caves.
  • Marbella: Elegant Costa del Sol resort with a historic old town.
  • Malaga: Andalusian port, Picasso's birthplace, with the Alcazaba.
  • Cádiz: One of western Europe's oldest cities, with Phoenician roots.
  • Figueira da Foz: Portuguese Atlantic harbour at the mouth of the Mondego, a classic twentieth-century seaside town.

  • Lissabon · Embarkation

Built on seven hills, Lisbon blends a southern European sense of life with a great history of discovery. From the Tower of Belém, Vasco da Gama and other navigators set out into the unknown - yellow trams and the melancholic Fado still tell the tale today.

  • Portimão

Portimão on the Algarve was a Phoenician settlement and is today one of Portugal's best-known sardine-grilling spots. Praia da Rocha, the spectacular cliffs of Ponta da Piedade in Lagos and the hinterland of cork oak forests define the region.

  • Marbella

Marbella on Spain's Costa del Sol combines the luxury marina of Puerto Banús, a Mediterranean old town with orange-tree squares, and the hinterland of the white villages (Pueblos Blancos) such as Ronda and Mijas.

  • Beobachtung der totalen Sonnenfinsterni
  • Málaga

On the Costa del Sol in Andalusia on Spain's southern Mediterranean coast lies Málaga at the foot of the El Torcal mountains. Birthplace of Pablo Picasso, the city is today a major cultural hub with the Picasso Museum, the Moorish Alcazaba from the 11th century, the Roman theatre ruins and a lively harbour quarter around the Muelle Uno.

  • Cádiz

Cádiz is regarded as the longest continuously inhabited city in western Europe (founded by the Phoenicians around 1,100 BC). The "tacita de plata" (silver cup) lies on a peninsula in the Atlantic - golden La Caleta beach, old city walls and the largest cathedral in Andalusia.

  • At sea
  • Figueira da Foz

On central Portugal's Atlantic coast, the Mondego river meets the sea at Figueira da Foz. The broad Praia da Claridade ranks among the country's most popular surfing beaches, and the nearby university city of Coimbra makes the town a classic Portuguese summer destination.

The Ship

Le Boréal

Le Boréal was the first ship of the Odyssée class and marked Ponant's move into expedition cruising. 264 guests, ice-reinforced hull, two restaurants - a ship built equally for the passage to the North Cape and the islands of the South Seas.

In northern Europe, Le Boréal sails through the fjords of Norway and along the British coast - natural encounters with the comfort of a French hotel.
