The Voyage

Lisbon → Barcelona

This seven-night voyage aboard Le Boréal follows the Iberian coast from the Atlantic into the Mediterranean. From Lisbon you sail up the Guadalquivir to Seville, then through the Strait of Gibraltar along the Andalusian and Levantine coast to Barcelona. The marina platform and Zodiacs support landings, while premium all-inclusive, French cuisine and an emphasis on the table set the tone.

Route highlights

  • Lisbon: Atlantic capital on the Tagus with the Belém Tower and Jerónimos Monastery.
  • Guadalquivir: Navigation along Spain's only navigable river through the Coto de Doñana National Park.
  • Seville: Andalusian metropolis with the cathedral, Giralda and Alcázar, a World Heritage ensemble.
  • Cádiz: One of western Europe's oldest cities, with Phoenician roots.
  • Malaga: Andalusian port, Picasso's birthplace, with the Alcazaba.
  • Cartagena (ES): Ancient Mediterranean harbour with a Roman theatre and Punic history.
  • Valencia: Home of paella, the City of Arts and Sciences and a historic silk exchange.
  • Barcelona: Catalan metropolis with the Sagrada Família and Gothic Quarter.

  • Lissabon · Embarkation

Built on seven hills, Lisbon blends a southern European sense of life with a great history of discovery. From the Tower of Belém, Vasco da Gama and other navigators set out into the unknown - yellow trams and the melancholic Fado still tell the tale today.

  • At sea
  • Kreuzen auf dem Guadalquivir
  • Sevilla

Seville is the capital of Andalusia and the birthplace of flamenco, tapas culture and bullfighting. The Cathedral (the third largest in the world), the Alcázar palace (UNESCO) and the Santa Cruz quarter with its white houses and orange trees shape the city.

  • Cádiz

Cádiz is regarded as the longest continuously inhabited city in western Europe (founded by the Phoenicians around 1,100 BC). The "tacita de plata" (silver cup) lies on a peninsula in the Atlantic - golden La Caleta beach, old city walls and the largest cathedral in Andalusia.

  • Málaga

On the Costa del Sol in Andalusia on Spain's southern Mediterranean coast lies Málaga at the foot of the El Torcal mountains. Birthplace of Pablo Picasso, the city is today a major cultural hub with the Picasso Museum, the Moorish Alcazaba from the 11th century, the Roman theatre ruins and a lively harbour quarter around the Muelle Uno.

  • Cartagena

Cartagena is a port city on the Spanish Mediterranean coast in the Murcia region and home to one of the country's principal naval bases. Carthaginians, Romans and Moors all shaped the bay, and the Roman theatre from the time of Augustus, rediscovered in the city centre, is among the most impressive in Spain.

  • Valencia

Valencia is home to the Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias - an architectural landmark by Calatrava in the city's former riverbed. The Old Town with the Silk Exchange (UNESCO World Heritage) and the Gothic cathedral, said to house the Holy Grail, deserves a leisurely exploration.

The Ship

Le Boréal

Le Boréal was the first ship of the Odyssée class and marked Ponant's move into expedition cruising. 264 guests, ice-reinforced hull, two restaurants - a ship built equally for the passage to the North Cape and the islands of the South Seas.

In northern Europe, Le Boréal sails through the fjords of Norway and along the British coast - natural encounters with the comfort of a French hotel.
