Region: Seychelles and Mauritius - islands of granite and volcanic rock

What makes this region special

The Seychelles are an archipelago in the western Indian Ocean, a thousand miles off East Africa. The ten nights of this voyage give you time for everything that makes the Inner Islands: the larger islands (Mahe, Praslin, La Digue) with their villages and postcard beaches, the small nature reserves (Curieuse, Aride, Cousin) with wildlife you rarely see elsewhere, and the quiet anchorages off Felicite and the Sister Islands. Unlike the seven-night version, here you need leave nothing out.

Mahe is the main island and point of embarkation. Praslin is home to the Vallee de Mai, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with the coco de mer palms. La Digue has Anse Source d'Argent, a regular on every list of the finest beaches. Curieuse is a nature reserve with around a hundred free-roaming giant tortoises. Aride and Cousin are bird reserves; on Aride a million seabirds breed each year. Felicite, the Sister Islands and the tiny rock of St Pierre Islet are quiet anchorages with the best snorkelling reefs in the region.

The water here is 27 to 29 degrees warm all year round, and snorkelling visibility is regularly twenty metres. The tropical light is hard at midday, warm in the late afternoon, and the sunset lasts only minutes - after which the southern sky stands above you, with constellations you never see in Europe.
