Puerto Williams to Punta Arenas
This 15-night one-way expedition links Puerto Williams with Punta Arenas and combines South Georgia with the Antarctic Peninsula. Silver Cloud first crosses to South Georgia's remote beaches, where hundreds of thousands of king penguins gather at St Andrews Bay and Salisbury Plain. The Drake Passage then leads via Elephant Island into the Antarctic Sound, dominated by tabular icebergs and brash ice. Further penguin and seal landings follow in the South Shetlands before the voyage concludes in the Magellan port of Punta Arenas. Antarctica is the last continent on Earth without permanent human settlement - a unique ecosystem of ice, ocean and wildlife protected by international agreement.
The Antarctic Treaty (in force since 1961) dedicates the continent to peace and science and prohibits any military or commercial exploitation. The IAATO (International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators) translates these principles into practical visitor rules: defined landing sites, maximum group sizes, strict biosecurity, minimum wildlife distances, no souvenirs.
