The Voyage

Glasgow (Greenock) to Longyearbyen

This 13-night season opener sets a course from Scotland's west coast all the way to High Arctic Spitsbergen. From Glasgow (Greenock) the route passes the Hebridean island of Iona and the Shetland island of Mousa heading north towards the Norwegian coast. Along the Lofoten and via Tromsø the proximity to the ice grows noticeably before the crossing to Bear Island and Spitsbergen. Aboard Le Lyrial, an ice-strengthened premium vessel for 184 guests, the naturalist team accompanies Zodiac landings at bird colonies, Viking islands and the glacier fronts of Spitsbergen.

Route highlights

  • Glasgow (Greenock): Embarkation harbour on Scotland's west coast.
  • Iona: Sacred island of the Hebrides with a historic monastery.
  • Mousa: Shetland island with the best preserved Iron Age broch in Scotland.
  • Brønnøysund and Reine: The Norwegian coast and the postcard Lofoten village of Reine.
  • Trollfjorden and Tromsø: A narrow Vesterålen fjord and Norway's northernmost university centre.
  • Bäreninsel - Bjørnøya: A solitary island in the Barents Sea between Norway and Spitsbergen.
  • Hornsund and Bellsund: Spectacular fjords on the west coast of Spitsbergen.
  • Longyearbyen: Disembarkation harbour on Isfjorden, the main town of Spitsbergen.

The exact route is set by the expedition team on site, depending on ice and weather:

Glasgow (Greenock) Iona Mousa Brønnøysund Reine Trollfjorden Tromsø Hornsund Bellsund Longyearbyen
10 of 11 ports located · approx. 3,340 nautical miles
  • Glasgow, Schottland · Embarkation
  • Insel Iona, Hebriden
  • Calanais, Hebriden
  • Mousa Broch, Shetlandinseln
  • At sea
  • Brønnøysund

Brønnøysund is a port town on the Helgeland coast of central Norway, situated between the Arctic Circle and Trondheim. Its landmark is the 258-metre Torghatten mountain with a natural hole straight through the summit, said in legend to come from a troll's petrified arrow.

  • Kreuzen im Trollfjord
  • Reine, Lofoten

On the island of Moskenesøya at the southern end of the Norwegian Lofoten, this fishing village with its red rorbu cabins by the waterside before jagged granite peaks ranks among Norway's most photographed scenes. The nearby Reinebringen hike leads to one of Scandinavia's most famous panoramas.

  • Tromsø

Tromsø, the "Paris of the North", lies 350 km north of the Arctic Circle. The Arctic Cathedral, the midnight sun from May to July and intense aurora activity in winter make Tromsø the northernmost university city in the world.

  • Kreuzen entlang von Bjørnøya (Bäreninsel)

Bear Island (Bjørnøya) is the southernmost island of Svalbard, lying in isolation between the Norwegian mainland and Spitsbergen. Steep bird cliffs, frequent fog and a small weather station characterise the remote isle.

  • Hornsund

In southern Svalbard, Hornsund cuts deep into the Sørkapp peninsula and is considered the archipelago's most scenically spectacular fjord. The fjord-like bay is a reliable polar bear area with calving glaciers and hosts Poland's only permanent polar research station, in operation since 1957.

  • Bellsund, Spitzbergen

Bellsund is a branching fjord system on the west coast of Spitsbergen reaching deep into the island and serving as a key whaling station in the 17th century. Today derelict whalers' huts and whale-bone fields recall that era, while Arctic foxes, Svalbard reindeer and eider ducks populate the tundra.

The Ship

Le Lyrial

Le Lyrial entered service in 2015 as the fourth and final ship of the Odyssée class. 264 guests, proven Ponant equipment and the experience of three predecessors. Particularly sought-after for Antarctic expeditions, where the ice-reinforced hull opens passages available to few ships.

In the Arctic, Le Lyrial sails through the fjords of Svalbard and along the Greenlandic coast - expeditions where glaciers, whales and northern lights are part of the programme.
