The Voyage

Santa Cruz de Tenerife to Málaga

Eight nights between the Canaries, Madeira, Morocco and Andalusia, framed by a music programme aboard L'Austral. Four Canarian islands, subtropical Funchal and Tangier as the gateway to Africa combine into a varied Atlantic cruise with premium all-inclusive comfort. The marina platform and Zodiacs allow excursions beyond the larger ports. Classical concerts in the lounges accompany sea days and evenings on the way to Malaga.

Route highlights

  • Santa Cruz de Tenerife: embarkation beneath Teide, the highest mountain in Spain and emblem of the island.
  • Arrecife (Lanzarote): gateway to the surreal volcanic landscape of Timanfaya National Park.
  • Santa Cruz de La Palma: colonial old town beneath the Caldera de Taburiente, on the island with Europe's clearest starry sky.
  • Funchal (Madeira): subtropical island famed for its levada walking paths and botanical garden.
  • Tangier: whitewashed medina at the entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar with views across two continents.
  • Malaga: disembarkation in the Andalusian port city with the Picasso Museum and the Alcazaba.

  • Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Kanarische Inseln · Embarkation

The capital of Tenerife is known for the Auditorio Calatrava at the harbour, its museums and the world's second-largest carnival after Rio. Tenerife lies just 300 kilometres off the African coast and benefits from a mild climate all year round.

  • Arrecife de Lanzarote, Kanarische Inseln
  • Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Kanarische Inseln

Las Palmas is the capital of Gran Canaria and the largest city in the Canary Islands. The city beach of Las Canteras, the colonial Vegueta quarter and the Casa de Colón recall Christopher Columbus's stay before his Atlantic crossing.

  • Santa Cruz de La Palma, Kanarische Insel

La Palma is known as the "Isla Bonita" of the Canaries and one of the greenest islands in the archipelago. Excursions lead to the Caldera de Taburiente National Park - a vast erosion-crater gorge with endemic forest - as well as to the Roque de los Muchachos observatory centre on the summit plateau.

  • Funchal, Madeira

The Portuguese Atlantic island of Madeira has its capital at Funchal, home to around 110,000 inhabitants. The city rises like an amphitheatre above a southern bay, famed for its Madeira wine, the spectacular wicker toboggan ride down from Monte and the Mercado dos Lavradores with tropical fruits.

  • At sea
  • Tanger

Tangier sits on the Strait of Gibraltar, where the Atlantic and the Mediterranean meet. The medina with its narrow lanes, the kasbah above the harbour and the unique play of light between two continents drew painters such as Henri Matisse here.

Destination

The Ship

L'Austral

L'Austral belongs to Ponant's Odyssée class: 264 guests, ice-reinforced hull, French cuisine with wine at dinner. Large enough for comfort on the open sea, small enough for fjords, pack ice boundaries and islands without a harbour.

The Canaries offer L'Austral a transitional sailing ground between Europe and the tropics - volcanic landscapes, spring-like climate and ports with Canarian character.
