  • Lavrion (Athens) · Embarkation

Lavrion (also Lavrio) sits at the south-eastern tip of Attica, some 60 kilometres from Athens, and is today one of Greece's foremost sailing harbours. Most Cyclades passages set off from its modern marinas, as the Meltemi wind sets in more favourably here than in the Saronic Gulf. Lavrion mattered in antiquity too: the silver mines of Laurion funded the Athenian fleet that defeated the Persians at Salamis in 480 BC. A few kilometres to the south, Cape Sounion rises above the sea, crowned by the Temple of Poseidon, whose marble columns glow golden at sunset.

  • At sea
  • Polyegos

East of Milos in the Greek Aegean lies this uninhabited Cycladic island, the largest uninhabited island in the Mediterranean. Turquoise coves, white limestone cliffs and a rare monk-seal population make it a Natura 2000 reserve of European importance.

  • Tinos

Tinos belongs to the Cyclades in the Greek Aegean and is the country's most important Marian pilgrimage site. The church of Panagia Evangelistria and the island's distinctive dovecotes shape its character.

  • Çesme

Çeşme sits on Turkey's Aegean coast about 80 kilometres west of Izmir on a narrow peninsula. The port town is known for its thermal springs, the Genoese fortress and the ferries to the Greek island of Chios.

  • Serifos

In the western Cyclades of the Greek Aegean, the barren island of Serifos is dotted with white beaches and copper-red mining grounds. The chora perches high above the harbour at Livadi and ranks among the most beautiful in the archipelago.

  • Kythnos

Island in the western Greek Cyclades, only a short crossing from Attica. Known for the thermal springs of Loutra, the horseshoe-shaped sand strip of Kolona and the unspoilt island village of Dryopida with its winding lanes.

  • Spetses

Spetses is a car-free island in the Saronic Gulf (only carriages and mopeds). The main town with its neoclassical captain's houses, the famous Poseidonion hotel island and the Anargyrios School peninsula (filming location of John Fowles' "The Magus") define the island.
