The Voyage

Gran Canaria → Dakar

Ten nights aboard Le Dumont d'Urville connect the volcanic Canary Islands with Cape Verde and the West African coast. You witness the shift from black lava rock and pale desert sand of the Canaries via the austere beauty of Cabo Verde to vibrant Dakar in Senegal. Lanzarote opens up Timanfaya National Park, La Gomera invites you into laurel forests, and São Vicente offers the musical tradition of Mindelo. The voyage arrives in Dakar, gateway to the UNESCO island of Gorée. With 184 guests, a marina, sixteen Zodiacs and the Blue Eye lounge, the ship combines expedition capability with premium comfort.

Route highlights

  • Fuerteventura: Pale beaches, the dunes of Corralejo and the quiet interior sheltered from the trade winds.
  • Arrecife / Lanzarote: César Manrique architecture and the volcanic landscape of Timanfaya National Park.
  • Santa Cruz de Tenerife: Harbour city beneath Teide, with the Calatrava auditorium and the nearby Anaga mountains.
  • San Sebastián de La Gomera: Last European port of Christopher Columbus and gateway to the UNESCO laurel forest of Garajonay.
  • Mindelo: Pastel colonial houses on São Vicente and the stages of Cape Verdean Morna music.
  • Praia: Capital of Cape Verde with the UNESCO old town of Cidade Velha on Santiago.
  • Dakar: Gateway to Île de Gorée and the start of any exploration of Senegal.

  • Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Kanarische Inseln · Embarkation

Las Palmas is the capital of Gran Canaria and the largest city in the Canary Islands. The city beach of Las Canteras, the colonial Vegueta quarter and the Casa de Colón recall Christopher Columbus's stay before his Atlantic crossing.

  • Puerto del Rosario, Kanarische Inseln
  • Arrecife de Lanzarote, Kanarische Inseln
  • Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Kanarische Inseln

The capital of Tenerife is known for the Auditorio Calatrava at the harbour, its museums and the world's second-largest carnival after Rio. Tenerife lies just 300 kilometres off the African coast and benefits from a mild climate all year round.

  • San Sebastian de la Gomera, Kanarische Inseln
  • At sea
  • Mindelo

Mindelo on the island of São Vicente is the cultural capital of Cape Verde and birthplace of singer Cesária Évora. The Mardi Gras carnival, the music bars and the colonial townscape make Mindelo the most musical city in West Africa.

  • Praia

Praia is the capital of Cape Verde and lies on the island of Santiago. The historic Plateau quarter on a lava plateau, the lively Sucupira market and the African-Portuguese culture make Praia the cultural hub of the archipelago.
