The Voyage

West Africa & Cape Verde from/to Dakar

Eight nights aboard Le Champlain lead you into the quiet island maze of the Bissagos off Guinea-Bissau, a UNESCO biosphere reserve of around eighty islands. From Dakar you slip into a world of mangroves, sandbanks and lagoons, where the matrilineal Bijagós culture remains very much alive. Saltwater hippos, nesting marine turtles and a colourful bird life define the region. The marina and sixteen Zodiacs of Le Champlain allow access where large cruise ships cannot follow. The voyage returns to Dakar, the vibrant gateway to West Africa.

Route highlights

  • Dakar: Lively Senegalese capital and starting point for the UNESCO island of Gorée with the Maison des Esclaves.
  • Carache: Palm-fringed island in the north of the archipelago with traditional fishing villages.
  • Caravela: Sandy beaches and mangrove channels, ideal for Zodiac excursions among waterbirds.
  • Bolama: Decaying Portuguese colonial architecture under tropical vegetation, with the aura of a forgotten capital.
  • Bissagos Archipelago: Biosphere reserve home to saltwater hippos, marine turtles and hundreds of migratory birds.

Dakar is the westernmost capital of Africa, set on the Cap-Vert peninsula. The island of Gorée off the coast (UNESCO) recalls the darkest chapter of West African history as a slave-trading post; the African Renaissance Monument is the tallest statue in Africa.

  • Canhabaque, Bijagos
  • Bolama, Bissagos

Bolama is an island in the Bissagos archipelago off the Atlantic coast of Guinea-Bissau and served as the colonial capital of Portuguese Guinea from 1879 to 1941. The decaying Portuguese colonial architecture of the main town is slowly being reclaimed by tropical jungle, creating a ghostly atmosphere.
