London · Embarkation
Capital of the United Kingdom on the River Thames in southern England, one of Europe's largest metropolises. From the Tower and Tower Bridge through Westminster and Big Ben to the London Eye, world heritage lines the river.
-
Dover
Dover lies at the narrowest point of the English Channel on the south-eastern coast of England in the county of Kent, just 34 kilometres from Calais. The Mesozoic white chalk cliffs are a British icon, and above them stands Dover Castle, one of England's largest castles, with tunnels from the Second World War.
-
Cowes (Isle of Wight)
Cowes lies on the north coast of the Isle of Wight on the English Solent and, since 1826, has been one of the world capitals of sailing thanks to Cowes Week. The harbour at the mouth of the River Medina is home to the venerable Royal Yacht Squadron, whose cannon-armed clubhouse starts the annual regatta.
-
Scilly-Inseln
-
Kinsale
Colourful harbour town on a sheltered bay in southern Ireland's County Cork, around 30 kilometres south of Cork city. Known as Ireland's culinary capital with starred restaurants, Charles Fort and memorials to the sinking of the Lusitania.
-
Holyhead, Wales
On the Welsh island of Anglesey in the north-west lies Holyhead as the main ferry port between Britain and Ireland. Behind the harbour rises the 220-metre Holyhead Mountain with an impressive Iron Age hill fort, and the South Stack Lighthouse on an offshore cliff is famed for its seabird colonies with puffins.
-
Belfast, Nordirland
Belfast is the capital of Northern Ireland and birthplace of the Titanic. The Titanic Belfast Museum at the original dry dock, the political mural heritage of the Troubles and the literary tradition (C.S. Lewis, Seamus Heaney) make Belfast multi-layered.
-
Douglas (Isle of Man)
Douglas is the capital of the Isle of Man in the Irish Sea between Britain and Ireland. The two-kilometre horse-drawn tramway along the seafront is the oldest in the world, and in June the famous Tourist Trophy motorbike races thunder through the hills around the town.
