The Voyage

Aegean from/to Athens (Piraeus)

Seven nights under white sails through the eastern Aegean. From Athens the Star Flyer links the remote Dodecanese island of Karpathos with Rhodes, Samos and the Turkish coast at Kuşadası. A voyage through traditional Greek island life, ancient sites and steep mountain landscapes.

Highlights of the route

  • Karpathos, one of the most unspoilt Dodecanese islands, with the mountain village of Olympos where older women still wear traditional dress and use dialects from Byzantine times
  • Rhodes, mediaeval old town of the Knights of St John, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with the ancient acropolis of Lindos in the south of the island
  • Samos, birthplace of Pythagoras, with the Heraion Temple and the Vathy highlands
  • Kuşadası, gateway to Ephesus, one of the best-preserved ancient cities in the world
  • Patmos, the “Holy Island” with the Cave of the Apocalypse and the Monastery of St John, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
  • Gavrio on Andros, one of the greenest Cyclades islands, with springs and walking trails inland

Life on board

The Star Flyer is a classic fully rigged ship with four masts and 16 sails, 170 guests, sporty and unhurried in atmosphere, no dress code, open seating and two pools.

Early booking advantage: Voyages in 2027 fill quickly - premium cabins are often reserved 18-24 months in advance. An early booking enquiry is non-binding and secures your preferred cabin category.

Disembarkation

Athens (Piraeus)

How the route could go:

Athens (Piraeus) Karpathos Rhodes Samos Kusadasi Patmos Gavrio
7 ports · route · approx. 600 nautical miles
  • Athens (Piraeus) · Embarkation

Piraeus is the gateway to Athens, Europe's oldest major city. The Acropolis with the Parthenon has towered over the city for 2,500 years - surrounded by a lively café culture and one of the finest fish markets in the Aegean.

  • Karpathos

Elongated island in the Greek Dodecanese, between Crete and Rhodes in the southern Aegean Sea. The remote mountain village of Olymbos still preserves traditional women's costumes and the old Doric dialect to this day.

  • Rhodes

Rhodes combines ancient and medieval history in a unique way. The Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights Hospitaller in the UNESCO-listed Old Town is one of the best-preserved knightly castles in the Mediterranean. Excursions lead to Lindos with its acropolis on a rocky spur above the sea.

  • Samos

In the eastern Aegean, close to the Turkish coast, rises the green Greek island of Samos. Birthplace of the mathematician Pythagoras, it is also home to the ancient Heraion sanctuary, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

  • Kusadasi

Kusadasi on Turkey's Aegean coast is the gateway to the ancient city of Ephesus - one of the best-preserved ruined cities in the world, with the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The historic centre and the bazaar invite a leisurely wander.

  • Patmos

On Patmos, the apostle John wrote the Book of Revelation in the Cave of the Apocalypse. The UNESCO-protected Monastery of Saint John the Theologian rises above the white-and-blue Chora - one of the most important Christian sites in the eastern Mediterranean.

  • Gavrio (Andros)

On the Greek Cycladic island of Andros, Gavrio serves as the main port for ferries from Rafina on the mainland. Hiking trails lead from the harbour through the unusually green north of the island to ancient watchtowers such as the Hellenistic Agios Petros tower and hidden coves.

Destination

The Ship

Star Flyer

Star Flyer was in 1991 the first ship of the Star Clippers fleet - proof that commercial sailing cruises need not be nostalgia. Four-masted barquentine, 16 sails, 166 guests: travel under sail without compromising on comfort.

In the Aegean and along the Turkish coast, Star Flyer shows what she was built for: sailing between islands that have drawn seafarers since antiquity.
