  • Gozo

Life on board

The Star Flyer is a classic fully rigged ship with four masts and 16 sails, 170 guests, sporty and unhurried in atmosphere, no dress code, open seating and two pools. Guests are welcome to climb the rigging with the crew or take the helm.

Route Highlights

  • Almería: Moorish Alcazaba fortress above the town, one of the largest fortress complexes in Spain
  • Cartagena (Spain): Roman theatre from the era of Augustus, only rediscovered in 1988
  • Ibiza: UNESCO World Heritage Site Dalt Vila with Phoenician roots and a medieval fortress
  • Maó (Menorca): Second largest natural harbour in the world after Pearl Harbor, British-influenced old town
  • Cagliari (Sardinia): Fortified Castello old town above the harbour with Poetto city beach
  • Valletta (Malta): UNESCO World Heritage Site, a planned Renaissance fortress city of the Knights Hospitaller

Disembarkation

Valletta

How the route could go:

Malaga Almería Cartagena (Spain) Ibiza Cagliari (Sardinia) Gozo Valletta
7 of 8 ports located · approx. 1,000 nautical miles
  • Malaga · Embarkation

Málaga, birthplace of Pablo Picasso, is one of the oldest cities in Europe, with over 2,800 years of history. The Picasso Museum, the Moorish Gibralfaro castle and the lively harbour promenade make for a culturally rich half-day.

  • Almería

Almería lies on the south-eastern Spanish Mediterranean coast in Andalusia, crowned by the Alcazaba, one of Spain's largest Moorish fortresses dating from the 10th century. The nearby Tabernas Desert, Europe's only true desert, served as a filming location for Sergio Leone's Spaghetti Westerns.

  • Cartagena (Spain)

Cartagena was once the most important naval port of the Spanish Crown. The Roman theatre (1st century BC) and the well-preserved Punic-Roman shipbuilding complex make Cartagena one of the most historically dense port cities in the Mediterranean.

  • Ibiza

Ibiza's old town Dalt Vila is a fully preserved Renaissance fortress on a hill and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. Beyond the nightlife, the island surprises with lavender fields, authentic fishing villages and the Ses Salines nature reserve with its flamingo-inhabited salt pans.

  • Mahón (Menorca)

On the Balearic island of Menorca in the western Mediterranean, Mahón welcomes ships into one of the world's longest natural harbours. The Georgian-influenced old town with its sash windows recalls the 18th-century British colonial period, when the island repeatedly fell under the English crown.

  • Cagliari (Sardinia)

Cagliari is the capital of Sardinia and lies in the south of the island on the Golfo degli Angeli. Above the harbour rises the medieval Castello quarter with its white limestone bastions, while behind the city stretch the long Poetto beach and the Molentargius flamingo lagoons.

  • Gozo

Gozo is Malta's greener, quieter sister island. The Citadel of Victoria, the limestone marvel of the Azure Window (collapsed in 2017) and the mythological Calypso Cave (Odysseus' resting place) make Gozo a Mediterranean picture book.

  • Valletta · Disembarkation

The capital of Malta is one of the smallest yet richest capitals in the world. A UNESCO World Heritage baroque city, it has more museums and churches per square kilometre than any other city; Grand Harbour is one of the finest natural harbours in the Mediterranean.

The route of a sailing voyage may change without giving rise to mutual claims.

Shore Excursions

Water sports – kayaking, snorkelling, paddleboarding, windsurfing – are complimentary directly from the ship at every anchorage. Details on available shore excursions for each port of call are listed in the route overview above.

Destination

The Ship

Star Flyer

Star Flyer was in 1991 the first ship of the Star Clippers fleet - proof that commercial sailing cruises need not be nostalgia. Four-masted barquentine, 16 sails, 166 guests: travel under sail without compromising on comfort.

In the Mediterranean, Star Flyer follows the Greek coast and through the Italian island world - ancient harbours, turquoise bays and evenings in waterfront tavernas.
