The Voyage

Caribbean from/to Philipsburg

Seven nights under white sails through the British Virgin Islands and Anguilla. From Philipsburg on St Maarten the Star Flyer takes you to those islands once famous as pirate refuges and now among the best sailing grounds in the Caribbean: calm water in the Sir Francis Drake Channel, sheltered bays and beaches still free of high-rise development.

Highlights of the route

  • Road Bay on Anguilla, a thin island with fine white sand and 33 beaches, British overseas territory
  • Jost van Dyke, the smallest inhabited BVI, home to the legendary Soggy Dollar Bar and a relaxed island vibe
  • Sopers Hole on Tortola, an old pirate anchorage lined with colourful Caribbean cottages
  • Sir Francis Drake Channel, the sheltered waterway through the BVI, one of the most beautiful sailing areas in the world
  • Norman Island, uninhabited, said to have inspired Robert Louis Stevenson’s “Treasure Island”
  • Spanish Town on Virgin Gorda with “The Baths” granite formations, unique in the Caribbean

Life on board

The Star Flyer is a classic fully rigged ship with four masts and 16 sails, 170 guests, sporty and unhurried in atmosphere, no dress code, open seating and two pools. Guests are welcome to climb the rigging with the crew or take the helm. Watersports from the floating platform are included.

How the route could go:

Philipsburg Road Bay Jost Van Dyke Sopers Hole Sir Francis Drake Channel Norman Island Spanish Town British Virgin Islands Basseterre South Friars Bay Gustavia
11 ports · route · approx. 350 nautical miles
  • Philipsburg (Sint Maarten) · Embarkation

Philipsburg is the capital of Dutch Sint Maarten - the smallest land mass shared by two nations. Front Street with its duty-free shops and the aeroplane beach bar near Princess Juliana Airport are Caribbean attractions of a very special kind. On the French side of the island, Saint-Martin, life is celebrated with French savoir-vivre: excellent French cuisine meets Caribbean joie de vivre.

  • Road Bay (Anguilla)

Road Bay (also Sandy Ground) is the main anchorage on Anguilla's west coast, famous for fresh lobster grilled right by the water. Lively beach bars and the historic salt-drying site in the hinterland make the place authentically Caribbean.

  • Jost Van Dyke

Jost van Dyke (British Virgin Islands) is barely 8 square kilometres in size, yet famous far beyond the Caribbean. The legendary "Soggy Dollar Bar" at White Bay Beach - where you swim ashore from your anchorage and pay with wet notes - is regarded as the most laid-back beach in the world. At lively White Bay, coconut palms sway over white sand and crystal-clear water, while iguanas, mongooses, pelicans and blue herons have made the hilly island their home - a paradise for photographers.

  • Sopers Hole

Sopers Hole at the western tip of Tortola is a classic Caribbean yacht harbour. The colourful wooden houses, Pusser's Rum Bar and the sheltered bay make the place the most atmospheric marina in the British Virgin Islands.

  • Sir Francis Drake Channel

The Sir Francis Drake Channel is the sheltered waterway between the main islands of the British Virgin Islands. Named after the English privateer who called here in 1595 - today a world-class yachting area with steady 25-knot trade winds and over 40 anchorages in sight.

  • Norman Island (BVI)

Norman Island in the British Virgin Islands is said to have inspired Robert Louis Stevenson's "Treasure Island". The uninhabited island offers cave diving in the sea caves and one of the Caribbean's most popular floating bars. Off the "pirate island" you can explore the caves of Treasure Point, take a guided kayak tour from Peter Island, and climb the hill for sweeping views over the Sir Francis Drake Channel; the beach bars serve grilled fish, seafood and cocktails.

  • Spanish Town

Spanish Town on the BVI island of Virgin Gorda is the gateway to "The Baths" - a rock formation of house-sized granite boulders forming pools, tunnels and grottoes between them. One of the most spectacular geological phenomena in the Caribbean.

  • British Virgin Islands
  • Basseterre (St Kitts)

Basseterre is the capital of Saint Kitts and one of the best-preserved colonial cities in the English-speaking Caribbean. Brimstone Hill Fortress, the "Gibraltar of the Caribbean", has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999.

  • South Friars Bay (St Kitts)

South Friars Bay lies on the quiet south-eastern coast of Saint Kitts, sheltered by hills and the South East Peninsula. The bay is known for its calm water and relaxed beach-bar atmosphere.

  • Gustavia (St. Barth)

Gustavia is the capital of Saint-Barthélemy and is regarded as the "Côte d'Azur of the Caribbean". The small natural harbour, surrounded by international boutiques, gourmet restaurants and elegant yachts, blends relaxed island feel with European refinement.
