The Voyage

Atlantic crossing, Gran Canaria to Philipsburg

15 nights under white sails aboard the Star Flyer, from Gran Canaria to Philipsburg. The voyage takes you through the Caribbean with volcanic peaks, colonial fortresses and unspoilt bays. Steady north-easterly trade winds turn every leg between the islands into a true sailing passage.

Ports of call

  • San Sebastián de La Gomera

Life on board

The Star Flyer is a classic fully rigged ship with four masts and 16 sails, 170 guests, sporty and unhurried in atmosphere, no dress code, open seating and two pools. Guests are welcome to climb the rigging with the crew or take the helm.

Route Highlights

  • San Sebastián de La Gomera: Last harbour of Columbus in 1492 before his Atlantic crossing
  • Atlantic Crossing: Around 2,700 nautical miles under trade winds westward on the historic explorers’ route
  • Starry sky without light pollution: Clear view of the Milky Way and constellations of both hemispheres in mid-ocean
  • Philipsburg (Sint Maarten): Island divided between the Netherlands and France, the smallest inhabited island partition in the world

Disembarkation

Philipsburg

How the route could go:

Gran Canaria San Sebastian de La Gomera Philipsburg
3 ports · route · approx. 5,400 nautical miles
  • Gran Canaria · Embarkation

Gran Canaria combines extraordinary natural diversity in a small area: the Maspalomas dunes in the south, cloud forests in the centre, volcanic cliffs in the north. Las Palmas offers an elegant colonial Old Town (Vegueta, UNESCO World Heritage) and a modern port.

  • San Sebastian de La Gomera

San Sebastián de La Gomera is the capital of the smallest inhabited Canary Island. Columbus rested here on all four of his voyages to America; the Columbus church and the Torre del Conde are direct witnesses to this history. Excursions lead to Garajonay National Park (UNESCO) with its mystical cloud forest.

  • Philipsburg (Sint Maarten) · Disembarkation

Philipsburg is the capital of Dutch Sint Maarten - the smallest land mass shared by two nations. Front Street with its duty-free shops and the aeroplane beach bar near Princess Juliana Airport are Caribbean attractions of a very special kind. On the French side of the island, Saint-Martin, life is celebrated with French savoir-vivre: excellent French cuisine meets Caribbean joie de vivre.

The route of a sailing voyage may change without giving rise to mutual claims.

Shore Excursions

Selected highlights at the ports on this route. Water sports – kayaking, snorkelling, paddleboarding, windsurfing – are complimentary directly from the ship. Shore excursions are bookable on board.

Philipsburg

  • Aeroplane beach bar at Maho Beach
  • Duty free shopping on Front Street
