The Voyage

Sicily from/to Rome / Civitavecchia

10 nights under white sails aboard the Star Clipper, from Rom / Civitavecchia and back. The voyage takes you through the southern Italian coast with active volcanoes, UNESCO World Heritage Sites and mediaeval maritime republics.

Ports of call

  • Trapani
  • Palermo
  • Liparische Inseln
  • Stromboli
  • Vibo Marina
  • Agropoli
  • Sorrento
  • Ponza

Life on board

The Star Clipper is a classic fully rigged ship with four masts and 16 sails, 170 guests, sporty and unhurried in atmosphere, no dress code, open seating and two pools. Guests are welcome to climb the rigging with the crew or take the helm.

Route Highlights

  • Trapani (Sicily): Salt pans on the outskirts since Phoenician times, gateway to Erice at 750 metres elevation
  • Palermo: UNESCO World Heritage Site Arab-Norman Palermo with the Cappella Palatina and Cathedral
  • Aeolian Islands: Volcanic archipelago and UNESCO World Heritage Site, home of the wind god Aeolus in Homer
  • Stromboli: Active volcano with regular lava eruptions visible at night
  • Amalfi Coast: UNESCO World Heritage Site with terraced lemon groves and tuff cliffs between Positano and Amalfi
  • Ponza: Pontine island of volcanic origin, already a summer retreat in Roman times

Early booking advantage: Voyages in 2027 fill quickly - premium cabins are often reserved 18-24 months in advance. An early booking enquiry is non-binding and secures your preferred cabin category.

Disembarkation

Rome / Civitavecchia

How the route could go:

Trapani Palermo Stromboli Vibo Marina Agropoli Sorrento
7 of 10 ports located · approx. 390 nautical miles
  • Rome / Civitavecchia · Embarkation

Civitavecchia lies about 80 kilometres north-west of Rome and is the classic cruise gateway to the Eternal City. The harbour is guarded by the 16th-century Forte Michelangelo, completed to designs by Michelangelo.

  • Trapani (Sicily)

Trapani is the gateway for excursions to Segesta (a Doric temple from the 5th century BC set in remote uplands) and to the ruins of Selinunte. The Saline di Trapani - sprawling salt pans with historic windmills - form a unique landscape on Sicily's western shore.

  • Palermo

Palermo is Sicily's lively capital, with Arab-Norman monuments designated as UNESCO World Heritage. Excursions lead to Monreale (cathedral with 6,400 m² of gold mosaics) or to ancient Agrigento with the Valley of the Temples - one of the most striking Greek ruin sites outside Greece.

  • Aeolian Islands
  • Stromboli

Stromboli is one of the few permanently active volcanoes in the world. Glowing eruptions every 15 to 20 minutes turn the "Sciara del Fuoco" into a natural light show; the black sand beaches and the tiny village of San Vincenzo provide the contrast.

  • Vibo Marina

Vibo Marina is the harbour of the southern Italian town of Vibo Valentia in Calabria on the Tyrrhenian Sea. From here the nearby Aeolian Islands and the Costa degli Dei are within reach.

  • Agropoli

Agropoli sits on Italy's Cilento coast south of Salerno, crowned by a medieval old town and castle overlooking the harbour. The ancient temples of Paestum are within easy reach.

  • Sorrento

Sorrento looks out from a tufa cliff over the Bay of Naples, facing Vesuvius. Limoncello, lemon groves and the narrow pedestrian streets of the Centro Storico make it the most charming base for excursions to Pompeii, Capri and the Amalfi Coast.

  • Ponza

Ponza is the largest of the Pontine Islands off the coast of Lazio. Turquoise grottoes, steep pumice cliffs and a small lively harbour village make it a hidden favourite of the Tyrrhenian yachting world.

  • Rome / Civitavecchia · Disembarkation

The route of a sailing voyage may change without giving rise to mutual claims.

Shore Excursions

Selected highlights at the ports on this route. Water sports – kayaking, snorkelling, paddleboarding, windsurfing – are complimentary directly from the ship. Shore excursions are bookable on board.

Trapani

  • Ancient site of Segesta
