Le Bougainville

Explorer Class – Built for Both Tropics and Poles

Le Bougainville is the third ship in Ponant’s Explorer class, named for Louis Antoine de Bougainville – the French navigator who completed the first French circumnavigation of the globe and whose name the flowering tropical climber Bougainvillea carries. It is a fitting name for a vessel that moves with equal ease between Antarctic latitudes and tropical archipelagos.

She accommodates 184 guests in 92 outside cabins and suites, in a hull designed for polar navigation but deployed across the full breadth of Ponant’s global route network. Her construction combines ice-strengthened plating with the comfort appointments that define the Explorer class: all-balcony or panoramic-window accommodation, open-seating dining, a spa, and the ship’s underwater lounge.

The Blue Eye Lounge

Like all Explorer-class ships, Le Bougainville carries the Blue Eye – an underwater salon positioned below the waterline with two large oval portholes and a hydrophone system. Guests can observe the ocean from within the hull, watching marine life move through its natural environment in complete silence except for the sounds the hydrophone transmits. The experience is most striking in waters with high marine activity, which Ponant’s itineraries are specifically routed to include.

Accommodation and Cuisine

All 92 cabins and suites face outward. The range spans well-appointed staterooms with panoramic windows through to Owner Suites with private terraces and generous living areas. Dining follows Ponant’s French-led approach: a main restaurant on open seating, a more intimate second venue for evenings and group bookings, and a wine list managed by the ship’s sommelier.

Destinations

Le Bougainville’s itinerary range reflects the diversity her namesake would have approved: Antarctica and Patagonia in the austral summer, French Polynesia and Pacific islands, the Mediterranean, West Africa and the Cape Verde Islands, and Arctic waters in the north. The ship’s relatively small guest count ensures that even in popular destinations, the landing groups remain manageable and the overall experience retains its expedition character.
