Region: Andaman Sea and Phuket - limestone karst in western Thailand

What makes this region special

The Andaman Sea off the west coast of Thailand has a landscape unlike anywhere else in South-East Asia. Limestone karst - rocks rising from the sea, some hundreds of metres high, overgrown with green, often with caves below the waterline and sometimes small lagoons inside, called hong. The area was the film location for pictures such as The Man with the Golden Gun and The Beach, and that has shaped its tourism. With the yacht, though, you can reach bays that the day-trip boats cannot.

Phang Nga Bay north of Phuket is the most famous area - home to Khao Phing Kan, the James Bond rock, the hong lagoons, and hundreds of small limestone islands scattered about. Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Leh to the south-east have Maya Bay (from The Beach) and the Pi Leh lagoon; after years of closure both are open again, but with a capacity limit.

The Krabi coast to the east has Railay - a peninsula reachable only by boat, with world-famous climbing areas and a long beach. Further south lies Koh Lanta, greener and quieter.

The water here is 28 to 30 degrees warm all year round. Snorkelling visibility is regularly fifteen metres, more at the outer reef. The tropical sunset is short and full of colour, and the southern sky with the Southern Cross stands above you at night.
