France’s Expedition and Premium Cruise Fleet

Ponant is a French cruise company operating a fleet of small, contemporary ships across two distinct registers: intimate premium ocean vessels for Mediterranean, Atlantic, and world-cruise itineraries, and a growing expedition fleet for polar and remote-destination voyages. Founded in Marseille in 1988, the company has since grown into the largest French-flagged cruise operator and one of the most significant names in the premium expedition segment globally.

What distinguishes Ponant from its competitors is not merely size or price point but national character. The ships carry a predominantly French crew, serve French cuisine as a point of genuine pride, and maintain a social atmosphere that is noticeably less formal than the Anglo-American premium fleet. We recommend Ponant to guests who want genuine French hospitality at sea rather than an approximation of it.

Fleet and Concept

The fleet divides into two families. The Explorer-class ships – ten vessels including Le Bougainville, Le Champlain, Le Dumont-d’Urville, and Le Laperouse – each carry 184 guests in a design purpose-built for small-group expedition cruising in polar and remote waters. All carry a Blue Eye underwater lounge, an innovation unique to the class, where guests observe marine life through hull portholes while at anchor.

The Ponant Yacht series – older and slightly larger vessels including Le Boreal, L’Austral, Le Soléal, and Le Lyrial – carries between 199 and 264 guests and offers the premium ocean cruise experience in a compact and personal format.

The Le Commandant Charcot, Ponant’s flagship polar vessel, stands apart from both families: a PC2-class nuclear-capable icebreaker converted to passenger use, carrying 245 guests to the geographic North Pole, the Russian High Arctic, and destinations previously accessible only to research vessels. We operate Charcot itineraries as the centrepiece of our polar programme.

On-Board Experience

All Ponant ships carry a single main restaurant with open seating, supplemented by a poolside or deck grill. Menus are developed in collaboration with French chefs and draw extensively on the destinations being visited – West African spices on Atlantic itineraries, Scandinavian produce on Arctic voyages. The on-board programme is multilingual, with French and English as the primary languages throughout the fleet.

Cabins across the fleet are suite-grade: most carry a private balcony, marble bathrooms, and premium French toiletries. The atmosphere on board is relaxed and intellectual – guest lecturers, naturalist teams, and destination specialists are standard on expedition itineraries, and their presence extends naturally into the social life of the ship.

Smithsonian Partnership

Ponant operates a selection of voyages in partnership with Smithsonian Journeys, the travel programme of the Smithsonian Institution, Washington D.C. These departures carry an accompanying Smithsonian expert – an academic or specialist connected to the institution’s research and collections – whose presence adds an interpretive layer to the destination experience. The partnership is exclusive to Ponant within the cruise industry.

Destinations

The fleet covers the full latitudinal range: Mediterranean coasts and islands, the Norwegian fjords and Svalbard, West Africa and the Atlantic archipelagos, Southeast Asia and Oceania, the Kimberley coast of Australia, Antarctica, South Georgia, the Canadian Arctic, and Greenland. The Charcot extends the range to destinations that are otherwise beyond reach for any other passenger vessel.

Why We Recommend Ponant

Ponant occupies a position in the market that few operators can match: genuine French character in a fleet that ranges from refined ocean voyages to some of the most serious polar itineraries available. Guests who travel with Ponant repeatedly cite the crew culture, the food, and the quality of the expedition teams as what separates the experience from comparable English-language operators. For the Charcot, there is simply no alternative.
